Problem with how tools appear

After the latest update (v 26.4.1) I have a problem with how some of the tools appear on the screen. For instance, if I use the eyedropper tool, it might still show the selection tool. I can still fill an object but the selection tool never changes. I can't distinguish the Selection tool from the Direct selection tool. An on and on.
