Problem with type on a path after updating to ver. 26.1

After updating to ver. 26.1, upon opening a drawing that contains text on a path, I found the text had moved.  Here's a .png export of the drawing as it was after the last successful save:

Here it is upon opening after the update:

I was able to fix the problem with surprising difficulty.  The text that moved is on the inside of an eliptical path.  Not sure if this is a bug, but that's how I'm reporting it.

PLEASE DO NOT MARK THIS ISSUE AS ANSWERED OR CLOSED.

(Please note caps are not shouting, but for visibility)

This problem is happening with new files, created from scratch in the latest version.  It's creating stress.  It is nearly impossible to position text at the top or bottom of an ellipse.  As soon as the handle is at the vertical position, the text shifts to the opposite side of the ellipse.  It takes far too long to get it right.  The build quality is very disappointing, especially considering the licensing cost.  I'm new to creative cloud, and so far, my experience is 7 out of 10.

Please follow up about bugs on Uservoice. That is the place where the engineers discuss. So if you want to tell them something: do it over there. This public forum is 95% not even Adobe staff. The forum doesn't fix bugs, the engineers do.

Hi All, @dcorsello999 @mac515044048 @DanFeather

I checked with the team, and this issue was addressed in Illustrator v26.1. However, we have discovered this issue is happening on some older files created on an older version of Illustrator.

This is mainly due to the path created as a rounded rectangle disguised as Circle, which causes the issue while editing it.

I would request you to check this and confirm. If that is not the case, I will request you all to share a download link to a file in which you are using the issue, and we will check at our end.

We will be looking forward to your responses.

Regards,

Anshul Saini

Note: Marking this as correct to highlight.

Hi Anshul,

Thanks for your reply.  I've never used the rectangle tool to create an ellipse, only the ellipse tool.  And the problem started immediately after I upgraded to 26.1.  So, to me, the problem was introduced, not addressed, in version 26.1.

I suspect the problem is related to the other part of the issue I reported, which is that repositioning type on a path is very quirky and challenging.  The type jumps from place to place while moving the handle, and it's difficult to get it to land in the right place, which for me is centered at the bottom inside of the ellipse.  This should be easy to reproduce, because it happens in every file I've created since I reported this issue.  I've tested in versions 26.03 and 26.1 on Windows 11 and version 26.1 on Windows 10.

Regards,

Dave

Further, in playing just now with a brand new file, after setting the posistion of the handle to dead center at the bottom of the ellipse, the text jumped to the 90 degree position as in the second image I attached to my original post.

I have pretty much the same problem. And it's a HUGE problem since I have a slew of variations of a new logo that needs web files generated. But now all the files have type on a path that's wonky.
Before the 26.1 update, the type on path was all positioned to read in the "up" orientation.

Now, it's all upside down:

I renamed and removed the preferences (~/Library/Preferences/Adobe Illustrator 26 Settings/), but that didn't help.
I'm using an M1 Macbook Pro, Mac OS Monterey 12.1.
This is most troubling. Interesting that, in searching for this problem, it seems it's happened at least twice when the app is updated. Maybe "check type on path" should be on the pre-release checklist?
Is there hope that I can revert to the last version to finish getting this project out the door?

If resetting the preferences does not help, report it as a bug:

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about this trouble. I tried it on my machine but couldn't replicate this issue. Could you please share a few more details to like:

  • OS and version of Illustrator
  • Is the issue specific to this file?
  • Is it possible to share a sample file?
  • Also, please confirm if the suggestions shared by Monika worked for you?

We're here to help!

Srishti

I'm running Windows 11 ver. 21H2.  My Illustrator version is 26.1.  This issue occurs in every file that contains type on a path that was saved in a version prior to 26.1.  In each case, the path is an ellipse, and on file open, the type is shifted by 90 or 180 degrees from the desired position.  However, the positioning handle remains at the desired position.

Renaming the preference folder does not fix the problem.

In all files, including new ones created in ver. 26.1, the UI is glitchy when attempting to position type on a path.  While moving the positioning handle, the text jumps to the opposite side of the ellipse and back repeatedly.  For files in which the text is shifted at file open, the text often jumps into proper position upon moving the handle slightly to the right or left and returning to its original position.

I saw another issue posted in this forum about glitchy behavior when moving objects via drag and drop.  Maybe my issue is part of that issue.

Confirmed that this is a problem with the update to ver. 26.1.  On a second computer, before the update, the design appears like the first image.  After the update, it appears like the second image.  This rules out a recent display driver update on the first computer as the cause of the problem.

Did you already try and reset the preferences?

You can rename the preferences folder as that will be reversable.
