Rough Edges on JPEG with new "Export for Screens" - Illustrator 2020 heartbreak

Hi all,

First, I have to say a big thanks. The export speed for JPEGs using the "Export for Screens" option has increased from around 30 seconds to nearly instantaneous for me on AI 2020. This, along with background export, was one of my top requests and I am so grateful that it's been added.

Next, a story of heartbreak. For many of my exports using this method, I now get jagged edges, especially on round edges and especially at angles. Please see attached examples. The file "TestLayout_Overall_01.jpg" was exported using the new "Export for Screens" dialog and has jagged edges on the oval shape. These jagged edges are not present when exporting from File > Export As, but this latter method takes much longer to export, particularly for large artboards which I use frequently.

So, is there anything I can do to make the jagged edges go away? I am using "Art Optimized" in both places and exporting at 300dpi in both places. Is this an anti aliasing issue?

Help! I'm in love with the new export window, but the jagged edges are stabbing me in the heart.

Desperately needing help on this issue.
As you can see in the image below, when exporting an image on an artboard in any way I get this unwanted effect on the end result exported images - lines that are not straight are cut into jagged edges and it makes the end product look like a cheap low quality image when in actual fact the original is just fine.

Increasing artboard size is not an option as I am exporting sizes specifically for social media where you cannot change the dimensions. This (exporting at higher px sizes) does however curb the effect of these jagged lines but still, even exporting at 4x PNG size the jagged lines still show up, albeit much less than before. Working in the industry means I cannot afford to have these exports being wonky / jagged. This only started recently after an Illustrator update.

This also happens when exporting as JPG.

If anyone has encountered this issue please let me know how you fixed it.

Your images have a resolution of 96 ppi.

If I export them at that resolution, with Art Optimized anti-aliasing they look fine.

What are your export settings?

The anti-aliasing option was already ticked, but for the sake of testing I took it off now and it seems to be exactly the same. the images exported are no different from one another when the option is ticked or not. That makes me wonder if its not working correctly somehow?
I did try exporting at 96ppi as you suggested, the image looked better than before - however that changes the pixel size of the exported image so I can't use that for social media exports.

I usually export at 72ppi. Doing so was never an issue until now.

I have been trying to export some selections of an Illustrator document as PDFs.

These have raster effects like Drop Shadows applied to parts of the image.

I select the relevant elements of the image, then use "Export Selection".

As expected, I get the interface and can select my export file type. I choose PDF.

In the Settings for the exports, I have gone to the PDF section and selected{Illustrator Default], [High Quality Print], or [Press Quality] or even a custom PDF preset I made when I was trying to troubleshoot.

My Document Raster Effects Settings is set to 300ppi, with anti-aliasing turned on.

I export the PDF, and open it in Adobe Acrobat.

At that point all the raster effects are blocky and terrible looking.

When I look in more detail using "Use print production" it tells me that the resolution of the images is 72dpi.

If I use Export as... and export the entire artboard, then the images show as expected. Smooth shading and so on.

And "Use print production" in Acrobat tells me the raster iamges are 300dpi, as expected.

I cannot find any indication that a raster needs to be set separately for "Export for Screens" etc.

Can anyone confirm the same problem?

Yup, I get the same result. All of these use High Quality Print with downsampling for over 300 PPI on.

Top file is Save As PDF.

Middle file is Export for Screens, using just the asset.

Bottom file is Export for Screens using the artboard.

I would expect all three to appear the same. I'll see if I can find an existing report.

I have an image in my composition that is slightly rotated and when I export it, it seems to create lines that distort the image. I've exported these same images before and they didn't give me this result, but now they do and I've already updated Illustrator once and nothing has changed.

I'm going to leave these images so that you can better understand what happens in the export (img1) and what should be as it is on the Illustrator artboard (img2).

Would you mind confirming the version of Illustrator installed, whether Illustrator behaves this way with all files, and whether this happens only when the images are rotated and exported in a specific format, so I can check it with the team?

Hello!

The illustrator version is the 29.3.1, is the lattest version on my
creative cloud.

This is happening with all picture that I import to the program that are
rotated. I already tried to turn liked files to embedded but it stand the
same. When I export in 300DPI the final export is better but if I zoom in I
can see that it’s a little bit off quality than the normal image.

Hope you can help me with that.

I know it was discussed in some other threads but the answers didn't quite fix my issues:
I noticed there is a really big quality difference between the two export possibilities "save for web" and "export for screens" - anti-aliasing-wise. Unfortunately I could not figure out how to solve it even if I tried to change as recommended:

I did align my artboard to the pixel grid.
I've changes my JPG-Settings (JPG 100) in "export for screens" to "supersampling".

Even the JPG file size is higher in the "export for screen"-version although it looks worse.

I've already tried to change every single setting that is possible in the "export for screens"-JPG 100-Setting with no improvement.

Any suggestion? I really would prefer to use "export for screens" as I sometimes have a lot of named artboards to export and doing it with "save for web" takes longer - particulary because the naming of each file is required every time.

There are anti-aliasing problems mentioned lately with export for screens and jpeg art optimized.

It's almost 2025, and this frustrating bug is still there.

The alternative way I'm using is to export as PNG format from the "Export for Screens" (Art-optimized setting) of Illustrator and then export that PNG once again into JPG format in Photoshop.

It's 2025 and the bug still here.

I'm using Illustrator v29.3.1 (64 bit).

Why is so hard to fix such a simple bug?

The "Export for screens" is ignoring the "Smooth Edges" setting in the JPG. This used to work a few versions ago.

This is not a DPI or file size/resolution! Illustrator is not applying the correct algorithym to smooth the edges of the images!

40 million years later this is still an issue. I don't get the options for art optimizes or type optimized, etc. IS there anyway that doesn't want any of their stuff looking good? I just had to place an illustrator file into indesign to get a decent jpg. Adobe Illustrator export options have gotten better, now we just need them to f*cking work LMAO

@Srishti Bali This is how to replicate it in 28.6
Place an image and slightly rotate it.
Export for Screens > JPEG 100 Art Optimized.
Using Artboards works fine, Using Assets they are horribly jagged and the Art Optimized setting is ignored. Embedded as well as Linked.

This used to work just fine, but the last few months when ever I use"export for screens" the images are exported with distortions (See attachements). If I export the files individually it exports correctly . Which is fine when is just a couple of images but I need to expor 200+ banners so it takes more time to export than actually bulding the banners. Please fix this.

When exporting which settings do you use in each of the methods?

I suppose when exporting the images one by one you do not use Export for screens, but instead ...?

In "save for screens", I've tried, type otimized, art optimized, and none. All of them with and without interlaced, and all in jpg and png.

For individual ones, I do "save for web" type or art optimized depending on the banner. Sometimes jpg sometimes png24 depending on the size specs

I'm using JPG 100 when exporting via "Export for Screens." I can't say I have tried it with the lower quality settings.

Also, I forgot to mention, this seems to only affect placed raster images. When you open the file, you will see that the black oval is a linked PSD.
