Question

Round corner widget rotates object instead of rounding corner

I have been using Illustrator for 19 years, so I'm not exactly new to it. I've been using the round corner widget for a while now. At first, it annoyed me when it would round the corner when that wasn't what I wanted it to do. NOW, when I want to round the corner, it's rotating the object when I click on the widget. I'm zoomed all the way in and all it want to do is rotate. This is frustrating, I don't want to cut the rotate feature off because I use that as well. Has anyone else experienced this?

Go to Object > Expand appearance. Should work fine after that.

I DONT have a fix, but I DO have a very simple workaround that has worked for me:

Select your object using selection tool (V), then change to direction selection tool (A) to select the corner widget.

(This will adjust all corners.)

For whatever reason, I am always able to grab the corner widget just fine when I change the selection tool, and never when I use the direct selection no matter the zoom or mouse position. Now that I've figured it out, it is just the minor inconvenience of using the shortcut keys when I have to adjust corners. Let me know if this works for anyone else...

oops said that backward:

Wow! Talk about disappointing. I'm completely new to Illustrator and I'm following the Getting Started In Illustrator Course. I am only on the second lesson, Create and Edit Shapes and I've already run into this problem and found my way to this forum post.

Here's what I have discovered with 10 minutes of searching and playing around.

1. Zoom in to your artboard to 400% magnification and create a rectangle. The corner widgets will only rotate the shape.

2. Zoom out to 100% magnification and now the corner widgets work correctly.

3. Once you have moved the corner widgets and rounded the corners they will continue to work correctly if you return to a greater level of magnification.

I'm 20 minutes into learning the software and already I am bug fixing! Does nobody write good software anymore?

I can't add to my post because apparently I'm not allowed to edit my own posts yet which is a little strange. So I will reply to myself.

I also noticed that if you create the shape at 100% magnification and then immediately zoom in to a higher level of magnification the corner widgets work as they should. It seems the problem occurs when you draw a new shape while zoomed in.

Hi there,

Sorry about the trouble you are facing. I am unable to replicate the issue at my end. Could you please share a few more details like:

  • OS and version of Illustrator
  • A small video demonstrating the issue could be really helpful.
  • Are you using a touchpad or mouse?
  • Is the issue happen while working on a specific document? If yes, could you please share the document with us? You can upload it to the Creative Cloud (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/share.html) and share the download link.
  • Are there any recent changes made to your system? For example, any antivirus, system updates, or web extensions installed recently.
  • Does resetting Illustrator Preferences (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/illustrator/using/setting-preferences.html) help to resolve the issue?
Disclaimer: Please note that resetting preferences will remove all the custom settings, and Illustrator will launch with default settings. You can also take a backup of the folders in case you want to. Location is mentioned in the article.

I will be looking forward to your resposne.

Okay, found a "fix" for this, kind of.  If first you click the corner widget, it becomes selected and then you can push and pull as we were used to.  The widget turns from a circle with a dot, to a bold empty circle and you will have control over the corner round adjustment. See image attached.

In the meantime, try View>Hide  Corner Widget

Use Direct Tool to select the anchor points and change rounded corners using the Properties Panel.

Happening to me too.

Shocking that Adobe can have this error on the most simple action, and not fix it in two and a half years

This has been happening to me for more than half a year now (I recall first noticing this behaviour around Feburary or March). It's now November and several updates later, and it's still sticking around. Same behaviour as what the original post describes - hovering over the Live Corner widgets shows the cursor change, but then when I click and drag it the whole object rotates as well. Has the Illustrator team been able to replicate or experience the same problem? It's frustrating and slows down my workflow a lot.

Hello friends, here is the solution to that nasty Adobe bug 🙂

- create a new doc

- create your form BIG, I mean fill the full page

- do your job: it will not rotate.

- copy/paste on your original document : everything is ok!

Try anything trick like that I think it should work too

Same for me. I'm using a triangle shape so the widget is extremely close to the edges, but I hover over the widget, see the curve shows under the selection tool, and then when I click, it starts rotating the triangle. I would love to see this bug fixed.

Please record a video of that and then post a bug report on http://illustrator.uservoice.com

Hi, I am very new ot illustartor and have been following some online tutorials. I am halfway through a project and the same thing has started happening with me. Half an hour ago it was rounding the corners, now it will only rotate. Please help !

With your experience, I'm sure you're aware the rotate function should become available when the pointer is outside the bounding box, whereas the corner widget is typically seen on the interior (acute side of a given path-angle apex). So it seems you're truly seeing a malfunction; the kind of malfunction that can often be cleared up with a reset of preferences. Have you tried that?

I reset the preferences and it's still doing it. I am inside the box, hovering over the corner widget. The selection tool shows a curve under it. I click on the widget and it rotates.

Ugh. I guess it's more questions then...

Have you tried it with the Direct Select tool?

What is your input device? Latest driver?

Did it just start doing this out of the blue?

Is it happening in a particular file, or all files? A particular object, or all objects?

Have you seen any other odd behaviors connected to mouse-clicks?
