Text on path/curve is disappearing after reopening the file in Illustrator v27.7

I have a bug/issue on curviligne Text / text on path or curve.

After designing and saving the Illustrator file, everything seems normal.

Once I reopen the Illustrator file, then the text that has been placed on a curve (Type on a Path) disappears.

This has happened in different working files of mine.

Hello everyone,

Our team has tried addressing this problem in Illustrator 28.6. Would you mind updating to the latest version of Illustrator (https://adobe.ly/4dhoeiu) and sharing your observations?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,

Anubhav

Anubhav,

I was actually given the go ahead to get the latest version (28.6) installed on my workstation today, and to my surprise, my quick initial test was successful. Hoping others are able to do the same, I will be back to report my experience after a more thorough test drive... Thanks, so far!

Sadly, this is still happening using Illustrator v 29.1. Am now behind deadline for a job. These and a myriad of other daily Illustrator glitches are affecting my ability to continue working as a graphic designer. I know I'm not alone in facing these continuing issues and like others, I feel Adobe should be paying us rather than the other way around. So much frustration, lost time, and missed deadlines. Wish I had a solution to share with others....

@P T Hartnett I was wondering about your message. I do not have 29.1 installed anymore. but at least in my version 29.3.1 the issue does not exist anymore. Is there any reason why you cannot update to latest version?

This insidiuos issue has been bothering me intermittently lately. I have been using version 28.5, and when I came here looking for help I was pleased to see an "answer" that v 28.6 fixed the issue. Well, it didn't. I just updated to 28.7.2 and it persists. (I cannot update to the newest v29 for work-related reasons. I use a plugin that is still not compatible with v 29).

I created a video demonstrating the problem. Here is a link to view it on YouTube:
https://youtu.be/8aEUd7cB8IQ

Here is what I demonstrate in the video:

1. I open up a file. On one of the type layers, all my street labels that are text-on-path are not visible.
2. I select all the type objects on that layer, then change their color to magenta.

3. I undo the color change and suddenly the labels look as they should.

Is this the same issue everyone else in this thread has?

Is it possible that the issue persists in version 28.7.2 because the file was previously saved with 28.5?

"Is it possible that the issue persists in version 28.7.2 because the file was previously saved with 28.5?"

I asked the same question right above your post and nobody has replied in months. Your situation is definetly proving that is the case.

New Illustrator update this morning - but no word of the type bug fix in the summary. WTF? https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/whats-new/2024-6.html

HAHA @gloriacatherine  you are absolutly right. I had downlaoded and tested the new version this morning already and I can confirm - it is finally resolved! WOHOO!!

but yes - seems that this issue was judged as a "minor bug" therefore not important enough to annouce the fix in the release notes... well it just tooks a year, one major release and a couple of minor releases to get it fixed...
congratulation

Illustrator Version 28.5 (64bit)
Same Problem: Type on a Path Text disappears and letters are scattered around the document, even outside the artboards. The Type object is where it should be though and is also selectable.

Solution: that works for me: Select the Text-Object or the corresponding Text-Layer and apply any edit (like reapplying the color, or just move it a bit and then move it back). It seems to be some kind of a rendering bug, becaus applying any edit causes the text ro re-render and renders the text correctly again. In a larger document with severel Type on a Path objects I just selected everything, moved it a bit with one of the arrow keys and then just undid the last action. This caused to display all text-along-path objects correctly as the were re-rendered again.

Hey jürgen, well thats true but this workarround is not a permanent solution as the issue reappears, every time when you reopen the file. That time the preview in illustrator seems to be right but if you export any file like jpg or png the text is missing. That means you need to do this workarround every time ehen you open a file. In a production environment, this is a no-go as it is only up to the user to rember performing this workarround, if the forget, and humans do mistakes, the output will be incomplete and wrong.

Of course you're absolutely right, this is not a "solution", I should have written "workaround" instead of "solution that works for me".
I just posted it, because the first time I encountered this bug, it took me quite some time to find all corrupted instances of "Type on a Path"-text, and with the "Select All" and move with the array key e.g. one right and then one left again, you cannot forget any "Type on a Path"-Text instances.

Can someone at Adobe please acknowledge the video proof of the issue and the bugged files that multiple people have uploaded already, lol?

Hi Everyone,

I apologize for the delayed response. My team and I have tried replicating the issue on our end, but we haven't been able to reproduce it. Gloria has shared her contact details with me for a debug session, and I am working to arrange an engineer for this session. It would be extremely helpful if anyone else could participate in a debug session to help us replicate the issue.

I am particularly interested in hearing from those who are not using the Esko plugin but are still experiencing the issue. Your participation in a debug session would be invaluable.

Additionally, I consulted with the product team, and they have made some performance enhancements for the Type on Path tool. Could you please check the Illustrator Beta build 28.7 or Prerelease build 28.6? Try creating a new file in these builds, and let us know if you are still encountering the issue.
Please note that these performance enhancements will not apply to old files, so it is crucial to test with new files in the latest builds.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

Best regards,
Anshul Saini

Hi, @Anshul_Saini  it is easy to replicate in the 28.5 version, but fortunately not in the recent beta or prerelease version.

For the steps in 28.5 see:

Hey there.
It looks like the Adobe employee pinned an attempt at trying to resolve this at the beginning of this thread.

Unless you've subscribed to this topic or watching it many probably didn't get the email that this happened.

They want to schedule a group or one on one debug session? I guess the developers aren't able to reproduce the problem on their end. Pretty crazy but maybe getting in touch with the employee at the beginning of this thread will help.
I haven't had the time to contribute in this way yet.

I'm unfortunately waiting on a fix as you and everybody else here are.

I can't imagine what some shops, manufactures, vendors, etc. are going through when they have to do so many circular designs for embroidery or printing.

Good luck. Let us know if you hear anything.

We also use some 3rd party plugins. will install them next and check again. keep you posted.

Can you please list which ones you have - then others can check as well.

ok again news.. seems that plugins cause the issue @Monika Gause do you use plugins from esko?
if yes I think I found the reason. see screenshot below - deactivate the "Update XMP on Document Save" option

can someone else check that?

To send a private message, click my profile picture and use the "Send a message" button.

Additionally, if possible, please try the following steps:

  2. Install a fresh copy of Illustrator under this new account.
  3. Check if the issue is reproducible in a new file created in this environment.

The user account or specific files may be corrupted, which might be causing this issue. We haven't been able to reproduce it on our end.

Thank you for your cooperation, and we look forward to resolving this issue for you.

Best regards,

Anshul Saini

I design medals so I am experiencing this a lot!   Please check the attached file.  Does this have anything to do with the text on a curved path disappearing or exploding? What is that hidden circle to the right of the medal?  I have never seen that before.

I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing issues with text on a curved path disappearing or exploding. I understand how frustrating this can be, especially when you're working on intricate designs like medals.

The hidden circle you mentioned could potentially be related to the problem, but it's hard to determine without seeing the file. If possible, please share the file with us so we can investigate further.

We appreciate your patience and hope to resolve this issue for you soon.

Same issue here. curved text dissapearing when i go to export as png. Have to reopen the file, click each text, reapply color and save again and then it will save.. extremely frustrating.

Heres a quicker work around until they fix this bug. Just select all on the artboard and press the right arrow key to push everything 1px to the right and then press the left arrow key to put it back 1px. This will make all of your text reappear without having to click each text individually.

Yes, doing this does work, but when the file displays correctly one time and then not another, remembering to do this on every file that 'might just have some rotated text somewhere in it' is just a total faff! 🙂

I am also encountering this issue where text on a line randomly disappears. I make maps with many labels for places and roads and this issue has been plaguing my work flow for a long time. I have recorded the problem and included the AI file in the Google Drive Link below, along with system information. I am using Illustrator v 28.5, and its still a problem.

As you will see in the screen recording, after saving the AI file and re-opening, the road labels disappear even though the opacity is still at 100% and the fill color hasn't changed. The text re-appears after clicking and dragging the text around. This happens randomly and leads to me having to extensively review my documents before exporting so that I don't miss any text in my exported files. Adobe please fix this.

I have encountered the same issue: the text on a curved path disappears. This occurs randomly, whether I zoom in and then zoom out, select the text, export the file to PDF, or print the document.

The temporary solution I've found while waiting for the bug to be fixed is to move all the items one pixel to the left and right, and then all the texts appear again. After that, I can print.

However, I'm eager to know if there is a permanent solution, as it is very frustrating to do this every time.

I am using version 28.5.
