Tilde appears when text is live

Pic is an extreme example--I'd typed the "23" then went to lunch. Came back to this.

 

This happens sorta randomly. I leave a text object activfe and a tilde appears sometimes, but not always. Sometimes instantly, sometimes after a minute or two. I've caught it a thousand times but missed it a hundred, including an illustration that ended up in a magazine.

 

Happens on multiple computers and versions so it isn't a keyboard issue. I searched this forum for  "tilde appears" and found a single post from 2019 where the response was to call customer service.

 

Anyone else have this issue? and a solution?

Hello @mattmoore72,

Thanks for reaching out. I tried to replicate this behavior on my end but could not do so. Would you mind trying to run Illustrator under Safe Mode (Windows / macOS) and checking if it helps? Also, try to run Illustrator under a different administrator account (Windows / macOS) and share your observations.

Huh. Just tried to get the problem to happen on purpose. Typed some random letters and sat and watched.

 

The tilde appeared after the cursor flashed 52 or 53 times (I might've lost count) for each of these pictured.

Did it again and the first appeared after five cursor flashes, the second at 53 again.
