Variable fonts > spacing won't adapt

As I change the weight/width/etc of variable fonts, character spacing won't adapt.

Am I doing something wrong?

Please help.

Technical details:

Illustrator 22.1

App language: English with RTL (Hebrew) support

Both Mac and Win versions (High Sierra, Win 10)

I've tried different variable fonts as well as Skia

share please some screenshots to see what the problem is. Make sure to show the Character panel on screen

There mihgt be some different causes:

- the installed fonts don't have Bold / Heavy / etc. styles

- your Character panel don't set Faux Bold style

- something else.

Without seeing the image it's hard to say something.

Hi Anna,

Thank you so much for replying, I appreciate your help!

I'm talking specifically about Variable Fonts.

Here's an example:

These are all identical copies of the same text box: same font (Acumin Variable Concept), same size, same tracking, etc.

The only difference is that I picked different values for the variable parameters offered by this font: weight, width and slant (you can access and control them through the button I've circled).

As you can see, the spacing wouldn't adapt. (I'm sure it's supposed to, I know a little about variable fonts. And no doubt Adobe wouldn't release a font with spacing as horrible as seen here. It must be a problem with the way Illustrator renders variable fonts, or something I should have configured but didn't, or some other technical problem of that sort.)

Does this help you understand my problem?

Best,

Ori
