Why can't I just scale with the selection tool anymore ?

I've either spent too much time in other adobe programs or I've been away for ages ?

none of the above scenarios I would think are applicable.

I can't scale or rotate anymore using the regular or the direct selection tool.

Free transform tool works for paths when they're already selected, but for instance not on text boxes ?

My Bounding Box has always been 'on'.

I'm on illustrator 24.2.0.490 and I feel r3tarded.

Can you show a screenshot of the item selected with both the Appearance panel and Layer panel in view? Is it part of a group or compound path?

It's standalone.

I'm sorry to say Larry, after an already annoying day, I took the easy way out

and shot a  'reset preference' bullet through my Adobe Illustrator cortex.

And now he seems to be behaving normal again.

Thanks again

Have you tried using the regular Select tool (black) instead of the Direct Select (White)?
