In Illustrator (most recent up to date version), I did a shortcut and accidentally turned my workspace to white. I went to preferences ->user interface ->brightness and changed the color. It changes the interface except for the workspace color, it remains white. However; if I open a new document it does change to the appropriate color. I just don't want to copy and paste all my work to a new document. This happened at work on a PC. When I brought the file home I opened it on a IMAC with the same issue.
Problem solved guys!
Go to View > Pixel Preview > work space goes to normal
Worked = Ctrl+Shift+H
And on a Mac it's Command + Shift +H. THANK YOU!
Worked=Ctrl+Y

I am having this problem with the paste board suddenly all being white -- in every file that I have open.
It is terrible for my eyes and I don't know where the dark grey paste board went.
I have tried toggling the overprint preview on, off, on, off = did not help.
I have tried toggling the pixel preview on, off, on, off = did not help.
I have tried changing to the darkest option for brightness in preferences > user interface = no luck.
I have tried the keyboard shortcut (on a PC) shift + ctrl + H = did not help.
I have tried the keyboard shortcut (on a PC) ctrl + Y = did not help.
This is awful and I have work to finish. What else to try for fixing it?
p.s. I miss the good old days when these programs were stable and didn't glitch out all the time.

Preferences > User Interface.
There is an option to have it white or adjusted to the UI color.

Thanks, @Monika Gause !
I forgot to add that to my list but Preferences > User Interface was one of the first things I tried.
But it was stuck in white mode regardless of having the dark grey swatch selected for "brightness" and the "match brightness" option selected for canvas color.
After rebooting my whole computer another time, it finally appears to be back to normal (no updates, just closing everything back down and re-opening a few times).
It really seems as though Illustrator just got stuck in that mode of having the white background no matter what settings I had changed.
Glad it mysteriously corrected itself, though! Having it the other way is very hard on the eyes when working long hours.

Glad you could solve it.
If that reappears, then you might want to consider that preferences can get corrupted. And then need to be reset.
