how to add multiple Outlines around an object in Illustrator

1. Make your shape with the fill you want.

2. Copy and Paste behind as many layers as you want to have outlines.

3. Delete the fill in your copies (if the fill is completely opaque i.e. no transparency, you can skip this step.)

4. Add smallest stroke on top and make them bigger as you go downward through the pasted design element layers.

For digital printing you will want anything:

1. in black to have a minimum 0.35pts wide (actual print area) so make the line centered at .7pts.

2. white - You want this to be 0.6pts wide (actual print area) if it is to be solid. 0.5pts on low saturation areas is ok.

3. Any colors in between should be 0.45-0.55pts. minimum.

Or you can copy and paste the element, make an outline on it, expand it, add a new outline... repeat until you have the multiple lines.

Can you please post examples? The approach might be different with single paths, groups or placed raster images. Also: in which way does it not work for you?

To add multiple outlines to one shape use the Appearance panel.  https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/appearance-attributes.html 
You can add multiple outlines, multiple fills and/or effects to any or all of these. Note that some effects will need rasterisation and the artwork can uickly become very complex. By expanding appearance you can then split the creatied shapes into simpler components if you need to tweak them.
