Huzzah! I finally got the 18.3 update today, and lo and behold; when I clicked on one of the InDesign layout files I worked on yesterday (after the MacOS verified the updated InDesign app) a Finder preview appeared, clear as day! Thanks Adobe!
YES!!! The fix is here! update took care of the problem. Thank you Adobe for listening to your designers needs.

I finally discovered that my layer was somehow made into a template layer, and moving my objects to a normal layer solved the issue - check if this is the case for you.

Not the case for me. It simply does not show in finder column view.

Finally, it's SOLVED for me!
With the update of InDesign to version 18.3 the previews work.
You just need to update the app.

Well, Adobe is taking a while to give us the 18.3 update. Three days still waiting. Since then, Upgraded to Ventura, hoping that would spur an Indesign update. No indication that a new update is soon. Creative cloud shows up to date on version 18.2.1.
Sincerely, not impressed.

"Clear as day" is pretty generous. I'm glad some progress has been made, but I reserve my "thanks Adobe" for the day I can actually preview a document in Mac Finder.

What preview size is set in your Preferences? If it's not 1024, will it make a difference if you change the preference then resave you file?

That helps with new or resaved files. Thanks.
A global default to "medium"-resolution seems like an oops of a patch.

I think this problem is not solved, only 1 of the two problems of the questioner was solved here. The second problem that bothers me is that the icon of the Indesign application does not appear on macOS in the preview pane as it was before in version CC2022 (v17) if you do not use the document preview.
To explain a bit, I have this option turned off by default, I don't need a preview of the document, I know what's in the document and also previously these previews increased the file size quite a bit - now I haven't tried it yet because due to workflows I'm upgrading to new versions later.
So I would like the preview pane to display a large icon as before, there are two reasons for this:
1) it's slow, whether the preview is stored there or not, browsing a folder with multiple indd documents is slow. This is because the system always tries to load the preview and it takes a while before it displays a straight application icon. On the local storage, the slowdown is smaller, but it is there, but I often work via vpn and browsing such documents on the server is a pain because the system first downloads the full size of the document and then only displays the message "ah preview is not available"... I note that I don't open the documents, I just click on them to be able to download them to my storage.
2) it's not aesthetically pleasing
Thanks, Stanley

I'm sorry, but I think we don't understand each other. Below is an example of what I want the system to do if I DON'T want to use document previews. I WANT to display the application icon as it was before version 2023. Just the same as it works with idml files or if I select more indd files - in that case you don't see the document previews either, but again only the application icons. It is not only a display feature, but mainly the speed of viewing such documents.
