Hi all, I am creating manuals that have headers and images/dimensional drawings. I will need to edit these manuals with additional text and or images to add delete. I have been using one large text box on an A4 layout and then adding everything inside. The textboxes are linked at the end of the bottom of each page to the next page so that the headers (levels 1-4) and table of contents will all sync properly. However, this means that when I add in text the images get thrown around at times. I may of course also delete text, add in several pages, delete images, etc as needed when updating these documents. I should note manauls are around 200 pages long. This creates a bit of chaos and the only strength of this practice seems to be the linking of the headers. I do realize I could manaually adjust the headers, but was not sure if this is the best approach.
It was suggested to me to make small textboxes for each section and then I can add or edit these but the issue is it seems the headers wont sync up? Any suggestions on this for a best practices approach would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to learn how to handle these tasks in the way Indesign is best utilized. Thank you so much!
Hi Christine!
Hope you're keeping well!
Anchoring your images within the text is the best way to keep them together and flowing

Hope it helps!

View > Extras > Show Text Threads
Anchor image in text frame by (Shift+) dragging the small blue square to where you want the image to be linked to in the text frame.
You can also create an Object Style with Text Wrap if your image is not "inline".

Thank you for the screenshots so I can see exactly what to do. I am going to start on a test document to see how this works out for me. I appreciate your time so much!

Have gotten some time to test this. I do see the dark blue lines connecting my text now that I turned the text threads on, but it seems nothing is happening when I press shift+ to try to anchor the image to the text.

The original post implied that you need to drag while holding Shift (i.e. shift+dragging).

I should add, the document I am editing was made with one large textbox and then text and images placed within it. The text is fully linked and shifts as needed. I am not understanding how to get the image to link with the shift+. Any additional help would be greatly appreciated. I am on PC.

Instead of Shift+Drag - you can select image, cut it - Ctrl+X - put text cursor where the image should be placed in the main text - and paste it - Ctrl+V.
There are two ways that images / objects can be placed in text:
1) Anchored - their anchor point in the text will always stay in the same place - but image can either have the same vector to this anchor point - or be on the same page but stick to edges or margins,
2) InLine - always stays in the same place in text - behaves like a glyph / character.
In both cases you should create and apply ObjectStyle(s).

Hi @Christine324 and welcome to the InDesign Community forum!
Here are few tips for long document layout:
One of our Adobe Community Experts, @Jeff Witchel, ACI runs a user group that meets regularly online. I see that another one of our Adobe Community Experts, Laurie Ruhlin, is presenting an upcoming session on long document layout. She's an outstanding presenter—very clear and easy to follow—I highly recommend anyone working in long document layout attend that meeting online on July 23. If you register but can't make the meeting, Jeff will send out a link to the recording so that you can watch it at your convenience.

Thank you for the invite. This is exactly what I need. Ironically I am from NJ but living abroad now! I have registered and gotten an email ticket, but will wait for the recording to be sent out via email because of the time zone difference. IS it automatic that it is sent out after the event ? Or do I need to tell the instructor I need it? I will in the meantime be trying all these tips on a test document.
