Hi together,

now the third thread in my series of "Convert-Endnotes-To-Footnotes Disaster".

You can find them here:

SCOPE: DOCUMENT

https://community.adobe.com/t5/indesign/cc-2019-and-2020-the-convert-endnotes-to-footnotes-disaster-...

SCOPE: SELECTION

https://community.adobe.com/t5/indesign/cc-2019-and-2020-the-convert-endnotes-to-footnotes-disaster-...

This time I did not use the menu dialog under Type, but a selection of endnote texts and the context menu for converting selected endnotes to footnotes.

The results were not without flaw, but I think the results were the best ones with my sample document if I compare them with the ones I had with the dialog window under menu Type.

As before in the other two threads we start with the same test document that contains 7 endnotes in one story and no footnotes:

Endnote texts:

Structure of endnote texts with the Story Editor window:

This time I learned that it might be wise to select all the text of the endnotes if I want to convert all my endnotes to footnotes. Used the context menu command of the text selection. From my German InDesign 2020 this is "Ausgewählte Endnoten in Fußnoten konvertieren" ( Convert Selected Endnotes to Footnotes 😞

Just a note to all scripters around us:

This menu command cannot be accessed by scripting. There is no corresponding string available and if you try to invoke its associated menu action an error will be thrown saying that the object does not exist anymore.

On with the results in a couple of screenshots below.

Message says:

6 endnotes were converted successfully.

1 endnote could not be converted.

FWIW: You will be able to see the result only after clicking the OK button of the message:

Ah. The one endnote text is remaining where the endnote special character is missing. Also the separator character and some additional text:

Let's see into the footnote text results.

Hm. We have 7 footnotes there. Obviously all 7 endnotes were actually converted and one of the endnotes were not removed in the process.

What else?

In two footnotes the first character of the footnote text is missing.

Manual formatting of the first text did not made it to the endnote text.

One of the special characters was also transferred in footnote 5.

Otherwise all seems well.

What is left? A look at the new footnote references and the one remaining endnote reference:

After I had my experience with the menu dialog under menu Type I am not surprised to see, that the formatting of the words is now on the footnote reference numbers and that we still can see one single endnote reference after footnote 4 reference.

All my test files can be downloaded from my Dropbox account:

Before discussing this further:

1. Let's concentrate on Convert Endnotes to Footnotes with scope on the context menu for text selection here.

I already added two similar threads with scope on Document and Selection because both functions yield different issues. See both links at the start of this post.

2. In my next post here I will add the link of a corresponding bug report on UserVoice.

Please vote for fixing the bugs.

Thanks,
Uwe Laubender
