Certain letter turns into a rectangle when typing

When I select a certain font and type any word with 'art' in the 'r' turns into a rectangle/box. If I type 'a' and then 'r' that's fine it's only when I follow the 'r' with 't' that the 'r' turns into a box !?

This has never happened before, any ideas?

This sounds like the font could be corrupt. Usually when a font shows a box like that it is because that font doesn't have that particular character. But that would usually be something like a footnote character or something else that is apart from the basic alphabet. Try loading another copy of the font (if one is available) and see if the problem persists.

Also, please post what the name of the font is and whether it is TrueType, Open Type or Postscript Type 1.

I'm using the font Drawing with Markers, it is TTF and I have been using this font for ages. I tried re-installing but the same thing happens

Is the correct character showing up in the glyphs panel for this font?

The 'r' is in the glyphs panel and is there and visible until I type 't' after it. Only then does it change to a box

What you are showing is the way that a missing character is represented. Check the bottom your Character Panel to make sure that your InDesign is set for your correct language. Also check the language in the Advanced Character Formats section of the respective dialog boxes for any Paragraph and Character Styles you might have in your documents including the Basic Paragraph Style.

OK. The Glyphs panel looks right. How do you have the font loaded? Are you using a font utility like Font Explorer? What ever way you have the font loaded try one of the alternative ways. You didn't say whether you are on a Mac or PC so you will have to figure out a different way to load the font depending on your system.

Hi Bill, I download the font then drag the ttf directly into the Font Book on the Mac.

I downloaded the font from the link Barb has.

The font (at least the free font) has a contextual ligatures feature that purposefully switched the r character for the .notdef character (the upright rectangle you are seeing). That feature (clig) is turned on by default in ID. Turn it off in ID and you'll get the r back.

That clig feature (such as it is) only happens if the word art is typed. I would suspect the commercial version of the font doesn't do this.

p.s. the font and arrangement of letters works fine in Photoshop, I suspect I have done something in InDesign whilst typing. Triggered some sort of shortcut or set a rule or something maybe...
