I just had that problem. I had an old alert that I did not clear. As soon as I cleared it the spinning circle disappeared.

Hi ,

Glad to hear that the issue was resolved. We have seen this issue, which has happened for different reasons. If it happens again, you can try quitting all Adobe-related processes and InDesign. Rebooting the computer and then checking again.

Thanks

I had the same issue. Found out my Microsoft OneDrive was syncing a massive .mov file over the cloud which slowed it down. I removed the file and it is now working fine.

I'm at my wits end. Will Adobe refund my lost revenue because I can't work with an application that I've used since you sent it out as a beta many years ago. Should I look into alternatives, or is Adobe actually trying to resolve this issue.

same here, using Indesign 2022 v 17.1 with Rightfont. It sometimes takes up to 3 minutes to open a document (previously saved with this version of ID). Display performance is dismal - even in "Typical Display" mode. Everything is jerking around and it is hard to select stuff. What a bummer !!

ID used to run really smoothly on my Macbook Pro 2019, 16MB RAM, SSD drives but now it feels like I'm on a 1990's Macbook.

Try disable Auto activation for ID in Rightfont.

Hello,

thankfully, after today's new Monteray upgrade the program works fine, no spinning or any delay at all.

I was having the same issue but just HAPPENED upon something that seems to have helped. Open the "background tasks" panel and keep an eye on it. Whatever it is "working on" see if you can resolve it. In my case it was font activation, activating a font that was part of imported text and not a font I was using in my document. I resolved all the font conflicts and that has solved my issue at least...

GRIZZLED VETERAN RANT:

With me, whenever I have the SPINNING WHEEL OF DEATH over the years it seems it is ALWAYS is a result of some kind of FONT or SUITCASE issue. Who do we have to vote for to get Adobe to REINTRODUCE ATM and handle font activation for all CS programs? I'll vote...I'll CAMPAIGN...just PLEASE KILL SUITCASE and revise and reintroduce ATM...

Hello and thank you. My window for background tasks is empty, it doesn't show anything at all. I haven't imported any new fonts in the new version om InDesign. The problem came with the update. And remains. I can work when after the initial spinning with the wifi on I turn the latter of and restart InDesign. The program doesn't open (it spins) with the wifi off initially either. So, wifi on, program on and spinning, then both off, reopen program and it works. Then I can have wifi on and all is fine.

Hello!

I have had the spinning problem with the 2022 upgrade. I have the program via my uni. I did many actions (restart etc, mac user) to no avail. I downloaded Illustaror and it worked with no problem. Then I thought to disconnect the wifi. It worked. I connected the wifi again and it did not work. Disconnected, it worked. Connected the wife via my mobile in an other country, did not work. Disconnected again and it works. Acrobat Distiller works fine too. Only InDesigh has the spinning problem when connected to the internet.

I have the same problems with the spinning weel and I have now figured out how to get the problem under control:
- Adobe Fonts disabled in the Creative Cloud app
- Creative Cloud sync set to pause (only leave it on when I need it)
- Preflight control in ID set to "Off
- Layout View setting on Typical
- GPU Performance in the Preferences panel switched off

Alas, it doesn't work for me, after following all your steps, for which I thank you. One other possible explanation for me could be the security programs my uni places in the laptop. I had problem with them before as I am distnace working in a different country. Still I have found my own solution, cumbersome but it works.

Hi All,

Sorry to hear about your experiences. I would like to know if the steps suggested above by @Manan Joshi @Derek Cross & @Eugene Tyson worked for you? If not, I would request you to share a few more details like:

  • Is the issue related to a specific document? If yes, could you please share the document with us? You can upload it to the Creative Cloud (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/share.html) and share the download link.
  • Where are the files and links saved (Network Drive/ System HDD/ Shared Folder on System/ External HDD)?
  • When did this start happening? Are there any recent changes made to your system? For example, any antivirus, system updates, plugins, or web extensions installed recently.
  • Please check if storing files & links locally on devices resolves the issue. (InDesign is a resource-intensive application, requiring more RAM and hard disk space than most other day-to-day applications we use. While you can use InDesign files from networks and removable media, you can compromise the performance and reliability of the application. For example, InDesign reads and writes file data while you work on a file. Therefore, the access speed of the disk containing the file & links determines how quickly Indesign can process the data. Internal hard disks have faster access speeds than network servers (a hard disk accessed over a network) or removable media.)
  • Please check if turning off the internet help resolve the issue?
  • Are you using TimeMachine? If yes, please check if turning it off/ disabling it help resolve the issue?
  • Please check if turning off preflight  (Window > Output > Preflight > Deselect the checkbox) help resolve the issue?

  • Please try different Display options (View > Display Performance) in InDesign. I recommended working on Typical Display.
  • Please try turning off GPU performance from InDesign preferences (cmd + k > GPU Performance > uncheck GPU Performance and see if that helps?

We will be looking forward to your response.

Thanks & Regards,

Anshul Saini

The bottom line is that we use InDesign for work. I personally do not have time to trouble shoot this app every time Adobe makes a tweak which feels like every other day. I have been using Adobe products for two decades and have always loved them until recently.

I have not been able to open InDesign since I downloaded the newest version. I have no other older versions to work from because Adobe has taken away that option.

I can't even get to the InDesign preferences because all I get is a spinning wheel (unless there is a trick I'm missing).

No InDesign version. No O/S version. No system specs. We can't even guess what to advise unless you provide that information.

I'm having the same problems. I haven't been able to do anything at all. File opens and immediately starts spinning.

Do you use a font manager?

I use Rightfont and had to disable Auto Activation for InDesign due to spinning wheel.

I use Font book. It's Preferences dont give me an option to disable Auto Activation...

I have the same problem. I can’t open InDesign (2021 or 2022) or Illustrator (2021).

When I open the programs, the fan of my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015, Big Sur) goes crazy.

Photoshop 2021 works fine.
