Hello all
I have a question.
Step 1:
--In my documment test01.indd, I have created a numbered list using paragraph style "MyList" (Screeenshot attached-> 01.png).
--Instead of default list, I created a custom list named "continuous" (marked red in 01.png attachment).
--I then applied the style in a text frame. It can be seen in the screenshot starting from 1 to 4.
Step 2:
--In second step, I created a new file named it as "untitled-2.indd".
--Loaded the custom list using "Type->Bullets and Numbering" menu option. (screenshot attached -> 02.png)
--Then I created another numbered list paragraph style in this document named as "mynumber" (screenshot attached -> 03.png)
--I then applied this "mynumber" style in a text frame (can be seen in screenshot 03.png)
--Ideally the list should start with 5 onwards becasue I have used "continuous" list from another document but here it is starting from 1 ?
From what I know that this custom list can be used between the documents. Here it is not working the way it should ? Or am I doing anything wrong ?
I am not using Book Feature of InDesign here.
Thanks.
Are you using Default List or a custom-named list? The latter should help you with restarting numbering. Read the section about "Number a List from the Previous or Current Story" or "Number a List from a Previous Document in a Book". Try the Book feature.

By all means, do whatever Barb tells you to do. She knows all about it. I suggest you go through all your settings and see if some small detail has been omitted. After setting things up, save, close, and re-open everything, including the Book file. Have a peek at the Book panel menu button flyout and check on Numbering Options there for each document.

If you organize them into Books, the custom list can know where the numbering left off an begin from there in the current document. Without it, it would have no awareness of the other document.

I feel like we must have worked closely together in a past life, Mike. We phrased this almost exactly the same way. 😉

Hi @shahidr100:
Mike's right—if you want numbering to continue across documents, they need to be included in one book file. Otherwise, InDesign is entirely unaware that you think that two documents should relate to each other.

@Barb Binder @Mike Witherell Thanks to both of you.
I will try to follow the steps again from scratch and see what I get.

@shahidr100: Mike is correct again—once the files are in the book, you need to update the numbering in the book panel menu.
