InDesign won't let me save or export files because they are "damaged." But when I close and reopen the program, they work again. Used to happen occasionally, but is now the norm. I get the error

Hi dmartinacco,

were you successful? Did something work?

Hm. I wonder if we see the same issue discussed in this thread:

16.3 Upgrade Corrupting ALL Files

https://community.adobe.com/t5/indesign/16-3-upgrade-corrupting-all-files/td-p/12229017

No solution yet.

I can only suggest that you do a bug report at InDesign UserVoice:

https://indesign.uservoice.com/forums/601180-adobe-indesign-bugs

Hi dmartinacco,

I would trust the message. Your document is damaged.

Do the following things:

[1] Close the document and do a backup of the file and work on with a duplicate of the file.

[2] Open the duplicated document and export it to PDF/X-4 without color conversion and without downsampling images.

[3] Open yet another duplicate of the document and export to IDML.

[4] Try to open the IDML file with InDesign and save the opened document with a new name.

Inspect the saved document if all is in perfect order: page layout, assigned styles, formatting.

Regards,
Uwe Laubender

Thanks...will give these steps a shot. It's concerning because it happens on any/all files...not just one or two. Would hate to have to do this for everything I have done.

Dear Laubender,

I still need help! Because my document does NOT open. This is what I get:

"Could not complete your request because of a database error. The file <name> is damaged [Error code:2]."

I cannot copy/duplicate the file either.

I work for a magazine, and this is a magazine file who needs to go to the printer next week!
Can you help me????? I could pay you if you can recover the file. Please help!

Hi @Evelien344902309gru ,

cannot tell who marked your reply the "Correct Answer". Apparently it's not.

You say "I cannot copy/duplicate the file either. "

You cannot do this in the file system of your machine?

If that's the case something differently is broken. Something with your harddisk perhaps.

What's your operating system?

Where is the InDesign file stored?

Do you try to open the document with the very same version of InDesign it was created with?

What version of InDesign are you currently using?

Can you go back to backups you did previously with that file?

I'd recommend that now with no further information from your side.

Regards,
Uwe Laubender

Hi there,

Sorry for the delayed response. I would like to know if the steps suggested by @Laubender worked for you? If not, I would request you to share a few more details like:

  • Exact OS & version of InDesign
  • Please share a damaged sample document with us? You can upload it to the Creative Cloud (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/share.html) and share the download link.
  • Where are you saving the files (Network Drive/ System HDD/ Shared Folder on System/ External HDD)?
  • When did this start happening? Are there any recent changes made to your system? For example, any antivirus, system updates, or web extensions installed recently.

Also, you may try the steps shared in this help article (https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/troubleshoot-file-issues.html) and let us know how it goes.

I will be looking forward to your response.

Thanks & Regards,

Anshul Saini

Ver. 16.1

Same issue, no solution that was listed above works. I tried upgrading or downgrading to newer/older versions of InDesign, but it didn't solve the problem.
