Exporting from Indesign using PDF/X-1a:2001 setting - white lines

Hi there

 

I have recently noticed fine white lines within images in PDFs (and they are cut up jpegs when you open them in Illustrator) when exporting from Indesign CC (latest version 17.3) that contains a link to a PSD image using the export PDF/X-1a:2001 print setting. 

 

This isn't consistently the case with all PSD images, but one set of images in particular. When testing using a jpeg instead of the PSD file, the issue is not present. 

 

This appears to only be a recent issue, as these fine white lines were not present when creating print artwork prior to these recent happenings. 

 

Can anyone please shed any light on why this is happening,  and if it is safe to use the PDF/X-1a:2001 setting consistently?

2001 indicates the year it was a standard. It is an archaic format that flattens everything, including transparency, and in the process you wind up with stitching artifacts.

 

And why in the world are you opening this PDF in Illustrator? Illustrator is not a general purpose PDF editor. Please give us a rundown on your full workflow and we'll be in a better position to offer you some advice on how to fix it.
