It is not possible to animate gif files in InDesign.
I strongly recommend not to use gifs (or even png) in InDesign. If you need files with transparency, use psd or pdf.

The PNG format is stable, tried and tested and works very well in InDesign.

But png has only a limited transparency model, pdf, tiff and psd are better alternatives and png can only support rgb.

- The OP did not mention transparency.

- The OP talked about interactive PDFs, so he doesn't need CMYK.

In any case, RGB flow has been recommended by Adobe for over 20 years.

Why you should not use CMYK images:

PDF does not support animated GIF or any other type of animation for that matter. Whatever you're trying to do, you're not going to be able to do it with InDesign and PDF.

This is not true, you can animate a PDF, but this requires some knowledge : https://www.abracadabrapdf.net/pdf-de-demo/multimedia-pdfs-de-demo/pdf-anime/

Hi @Susana5EEC, Adobe Acrobat Pro (X and later) does allow embedding videos in PDFs, (MP4, MOV, and other formats). But the experience is not ideal and may differ depending on the viewer. The controls to play the video can be wonky, too. As others have confirmed, InDesign and Acrobat are not good for motion displays! You might consider PowerPoint as an alternative for displaying animated GIFs.

thank you very much for your reply. It's a shame not to take advantage of
animation with interactive PDFs generated in InDesign.
thanks

@Susana5EEC, you are welcome! Yes, maybe one day these capabilities will be available, who knows? Please come back to the Community whenever you need help and to help other users, too.

Most of the "good" interactive features in PDF were courtsey of the now-defunct Flash. The only thing _I_ consider interactive now is form fields...

Honestly, I can't even recommend it for that either unless it's very specialized. Too many people want to open them in a browser, but if you're doing that, it's better to create a form on the web, anyway. Way easier to do and much more reliable.

For me, the only use of interactivity in PDF is for navigation using hyperlinks and bookmarks.

PDF forms are still important for many people/companies, but I forgot about bookmarks and hyperlinks. Those are important "interactive" features too.

Of course, but again for specialized use. There are too many other ways of doing it that are more efficient for creation and user friendliness.

Many of the issues we see reported are from people that are having issues with them in browsers or on mobile devices.

My computer monitor always gets messy whenever I'm required to do a wet signature on a online form...

"Too many people want to open them in a browser"

Placing the interactive PDF in a PDF Portfolio is the best and simplest way to avoid this, and it's a shame that Adobe doesn't communicate better on this subject.
