I have typset a large book of 500 pages.

Client would like the numbering of the chapters and sub-chapters at the top of each page.

Is there a script or other method to do this?

For the chapter numbering to work each chapter has to be a separate file compiled into a book using the File>New>Book

Chapter numbering doesn't work outside of this.

To put running heads - you'd have to insert Text Variables as per @Robert at ID-Tasker

You can get creative with them.

For example if your text is

Chapter 1 - The Beginning

but you only want Chapter 1 on the left

Apply a character style to the Chapter 1 2 3 etc. for that text - you can search and apply with GREP for the heading sty

Then the running header variable would be for Chapter Numbers - and pick that character style and only this Character Style appears in that area.

There's plenty of tutorials online for Running Headers and Text Variables for InDesign.

Your question isn't entirely clear. Is it about numbering or about positioning those items at the top of the (next) page?

If it's about numbering, read the text that Robert linked. If it's about positioning those chapters, set the Start Paragraph property in the paragraph style to next page:

Great thinking @Peter Kahrel

You can go one step further and start chapters on next Odd Page

Ensuring all chapters start on the right hand page (recto)

Typically, chapters would start on a right hand page - but don't have to.
