Indesign 2023 Shortcut Problems

New Here ,
Oct 24, 2022 Oct 24, 2022

Hey there, I just upgraded to the 2023 CC and I'm having MAJOR problems with InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop in particular. Most shortcuts don't work, starting from “space” for the temporary hand-tool to pressing shift while scaling for locked proportions. I didn't change anything else and as I said, it's not only InDesign. Please help.

Sorry to hear this experience

Reinstalling rarely fixes everything - you can do a complete reinstall using the
Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/cc-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html

Try this: Quit out of all your applications and Shut Down. Start your computer and disable startup applications (probably hold down the Shift key).

In the program you're having a problem, say InDesign, OPEN IT FIRST. Try your modifier keys like Space Bar or Option/Alt again. There's a good chance it will work! If so, open your other applications one at a time and test again and to see which application or browser extension is stealing your modifier keys.

Hey, I did that, and some issues got resolved in Illustrator and Photoshop, however I'm still experiencing them in InDesign, Shift doesn't work in any transformation.

Sometimes system shortcuts or applications on other programs can override the InDesign shortcuts. Do you have any 3rd party apps or similar shortcuts setup elsewhere?

Same here - No. The fresh install of indesign simply does not work with basic short cuts like SHIFT + Command + ALT to resize object. Pretty disapointing. took me a while to figure out "Adobe" downloaded and tried to replace the default on my computer without telling me with this junk. Gets in the way of my work with a basic issue like this

@Robert5DBE  same problem here. I just updated to the older version in hopes of resolving it, but the issue remains. It's annoying, cuz I have to restart the mac to solve it temporarely, and I've lost count of how many times I've done this. Photoshop and illustrator shares the same issue.

Hi @Ninin Studio, I'm sorry to hear about the trouble with InDesign shortcuts not working. Because this thread was started in October 2022 (six months ago), can you let us know more about what is exactly happening on your end today? Was it with InDesign 18.2.1 where the issue first started happening? Can you let us know if you are running the latest macOS 13 (Ventura 22) and what your model is? Have you updated to the latest Creative Cloud Desktop app? Other than reverting to an earlier version, have you tried any other troubleshooting steps yet, such as disabling startup applications? A little more info and we'll try to help you.

Hello @J E L . The problem started less than a week ago, right after updating to the new version 18.2.1. The problem usually happens after a while, when I resume my activities after the system was in screen sleep mode.

Initially, after some research on web, I thought it might be a conflict with Microsoft programs like Word and Excell, which I also use. I thought that these programs could be “stealing” the shortcut keys of Adobe applications, hence the possible conflict, but I'm not sure if that's the case, i've tried to quitting those possible offending apps, but doesnt seem to resolve it.

The problem started with the 3 applications simultaniouly, I aften use all of them opened, IndDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.
OS is on the latest version Ventura 13.3.1, the model is MacBook Pro 16 inch M1 Max 32gb.
About the Creative Cloud, its already updated and the startup tip, well, none Adobe apps is enbled.

Help me to solve this, please, thats tottaly unproductive to have to restart the mac everytime.

Hi @Ninin Studio Thanks for this extra info. It does sound unusual, since it only happens “after a while” and on resuming after system sleep mode.

Other fixes for “Keyboard shortcuts not working” say: Usually caused by a 3rd-party software, possibly a browser plug-in. Try rebooting and loading InDesign. If it works, then load the browser and see if it breaks.

You can also try to “Restore all preferences and default settings.” Scroll to that heading on this page for instructions: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/setting-preferences.html

Finally, this page indicates “Issues with some keyboard shortcuts” as a fixed issue here: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/fixed-issues.html. It's possible you'll need to contact tech support when you have some extra time to get someone who can work directly with you.
