InDesign 2025 Crashing When Using Find/Change with Overset Text

Explorer ,
Oct 25, 2024 Oct 25, 2024

Since updating to 2025, we've run into an issue when using the Find/Change window—if we're searching for something that happens to be in overset text, clicking "find" crashes the program. Has anyone else run into this or found a solution? (The file size doesn't matter; it happens on long books and short books alike.)

Hi everyone,

I wanted to follow up on the recent discussions regarding the crashes during Find/Change actions in InDesign 2025 when overset text is involved. I’m currently checking in with the product team about this issue and can confirm that I have also been able to reproduce it on my end.

I’ll keep you all updated as soon as I have more information.

Thank you for your patience!

Best,

Abhishek Rao

I experienced the application crash consistently when searching the word "role". Yes, the end of the doc displays the red "+" symbol, indicating overset text.

Very glad you are working on this issue. It has been occurring repeatedly over the last several days...when using "find" and when using "spellcheck." The "find" procedure may work for 4 or 5 words and then crash; same for spellcheck. Editors like myself rely heavily on "find." I'm using version 20.0 and my InDesign app is up-to-date. I have sent numerous crash reports. Very anxious to see this resolved.

An update on my earlier post. It is not just happening with overset text. The documents I've been working on have no overset text, and it still crashing when using "find."

Are you running the latest update, InDesign 20.0.1? It should fix this issue.

@Abhishek Rao

Overset text - ANYWHERE in the document - was never a problem.

It's clearly another bug in the 2025 version...

Yes, I have the same problem. I crash with the latest update of 2025 Indesign/Incopy v. 20, when trying to press command+F, or any other commands for that matter. InCopy won't even stay open on some of my files for more than two seconds. I have a MacBook Pro with M3 chip, and I'm on Sonoma 14.7 OS.

I recently updated Indesign to the (20.0) Version. Every time I try to Find and Change it pops up saying an error has occured, which I then have the option to send a report or not. I'm currently working in the previous Version (19.5) to finish my job. Anyone else have this problem?

Have to thank Adobe again, after constant crashing I had to downgrade Indesign. "Well done", Adobe. Perhaps there is no need to provide versions that are completely useless.

Make a blank document and made a single text box.

Paste in more text then it can hold.

Use the "Find" to search for a word that could not fit in this text box (overtext).

Can't reproduce it. What's your exact InDesign version?

(Also, update Sonoma to its latest version, even though it's unlikely to make a difference in this case.)

I fully updated InDesign. It would only tell me version 20.0 so I cannot confirm its 20.01. But I tred updating it in several areas and it told me it was updated.

What version is reported in the InDesign > About InDesign window? If it's still 20.0, then it's not the latest version. If you don't see the 20.0.1 update in your Creative Cloud, then I don't know why it happens, but the overset text crash bug should be fixed in the latest version. Try to log out then log back in to Creative Cloud.

I think I have the same problem. It always crashes when I Find & Replace and I also have some text "outside" of the text box. Mac Mini M1 2020, macOS 13.7.1 (22H221)

Can you please clarify... What version of InDesign are you currently using, and what version do (or did?) you have the problem with?
