InDesign constantly crashing since 2017 update.

Been working on a few different files for a few different clients, ranging from multi-page booklets (5.5x8.5" and 8.5x11" page sizes) to 2 sided menus, and ever since I've updated this week, my files take 30 mins to open (if they open at all) and then freeze when navigating throughout the document. (I've made books at the same size, over 150 pages with images and vectors with no problems like this before.)

So, 2 questions; is anyone else experiencing this issue, or an issue like this? I started using the CC libraries more often a few months ago (for vector assets like logos, not photos), could these linked files be lagging me out?

Thanks for the help!

Hi Monica ,

i have Indesign 2017.1 (Build 12.1.0.56) installed.

It continues crashing when i try to click ok on a script with a GUI and with tabs.

The solution was to reinstall with deleting the user preferences while uninstalling the programm.

Without this step it didn't work, with this step the script is working again.

To all of you who are struggling, I want to point out that if the upgrade is impeding your workflow, you can reinstall CC 2015 until these issues are resolved. The instructions are in the 2nd half of this post.

Unchecking the stuff under Advanced Text did not do anything. Resetting and deleting preferences did not do anything. Uninstalling and reinstalling 2017 CC did nothing.

Installing CC 2015, and converting my 2017 format down to 2015 allowed it work fine in 2015CC.

I then opened that newly converted 2015 format file in 2017 CC and saved it out as a 2017 format. All is well again, but what a f***ing pain in the ass.

I'm having the same problem.  When I open files, sometimes the colored spinner just spins and spins and I have to force quit InDesign to get it to perform.  Sometimes it doesn't do it all day and other days, it does it constantly.  Yesterday that is all I got done was start over and over.  I own a printing company and do much of the art myself.  Wonderfing if anyone has come up with a fix yet.  Any help is much appreciated.

I also unchecked the Advanced Text options but still the same issue.  I contacted Adobe - sent my file to them and have been waiting for them to get back to me for a week now. My issue is only when using tabs - the files work perfectly as long as I do not mess with the text box with tabs and tab leaders. I keep bugging Adobe so hopefully I will hear back soon. They are also having issues with Illustrator as well  - I have not been able to upgrade to the latest version because it constantly crashes too! I am still using Illustrator CC 2015.  Don't understand why the updates have bugs - the programs worked fine at one point stop upgrading every year or two!

Also having a random crashing problem.  Sometimes when I try to export a pdf.  It also hangs on creating pdfs sometimes so I have to restart inDesign to get it to work again.

Another problem is making small text changes.  If I select a line of text or a paragraph and then try to change the spacing in Paragraph settings it often will replace the text with whatever I am trying to type into the space field.  It is very annoying.  To get it to work I have to click multiple times in the field for the new spacing number and can't use the up down arrows to adjust-- it needs the number typed in.  Super pain in the...

Going to have to throw my hat into the ring on this one as well. Multiple crashes. Very unstable. I can't alter text, place images or uncheck the Advanced Type - Contextual Controls.. it crashes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Going back to 2015 for a little bit.

Just chiming in to say I also am having lots of crashes.

This may be the worst version ever.

If anyone has seen anything anywhere about fixes please post.

Mike-- when you go back to 2015 version do you have any problems with files you created with 2017 version?

Cheers

Amy

My crashes only happened when using tabbed paragraphs so this may not help everyone - but after contacting Adobe and finally getting someone on the phone - I unchecked two boxes in Advanced Type:

Capture.JPG

and this solved my problem so far (fingers crossed).  I have not had other crashes as mentioned above with pdf files or other areas.  It seems that the reason for Indesign crashes are all over the board - and different for everyone which does not make any sense at all.

Thanks Jen. I turned those off and so far so good. No crashes in last hour or so.

Note: your link did not work automatically— I had to copy and paste it.

In case others had this problem with the link here are the ones to turn off.

Cheers

Still crashing. Even had a few crashes of inDesign when I wasn’t even actively using it— it was just open in the background.

Does anyone know a good email address for sending a message to Adobe?

Having a number of issues with the program as well. Takes forever to open a file. Once opened the scroller staggers a lot while trying to work through a document. I work on magazines and books, as well as small one page files, and in every situation the staggering is present. Many times I have to click on a text box numerous times before it finally initiates a contact to type. It's like the program is frequently in a state of temporary freezes.

I'm also having problems with InDesign 2017 crashing when I load in XML. Worked fine in 2015 but now can't even open the updated files in 2017 without it crashing straight away. I'm wasting so much time. Contacted and sent files to Adobe but not had a reply.

While having these issues all week, I finally had a chance to find this thread... I tried a combination of all of these suggestions and have FINALLY opened a document successfully! We'll see how long it lasts, but want to recap everything that I tried:

Though a document opened and launching the app took forever, I finally could do the following:

  1. Unchecked Type Contextual Controls in Preferences > Advanced Type
(suggested by many and screenshotted above by Jen Wing
    Capture.JPG
  2. In the open document, Save As > CS4 or Later (Thanks, David Kilpatrick)
  3. Tried to close out of InDesign, it wouldn't close, so closed out all Adobe processes:
    • Go into Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Escape)
    • Under Preferences, right click and close process tree for all open Adobe processes
  4. Followed BarbBinder's suggestion above to Troubleshoot text selection issues
  5. Re-Opened the CS4 or Later document, and re-saved as a CC 2017 doc.

So far, this is working... but WOW! What a pain it has been to have this issue all week. Hope I don't have to do this for all existing documents.... we shall see! And thanks everyone for the suggestions above!

Just an update: THIS IS NO LONGER WORKING! It worked until the end of the day, but has been lagging ever since. I am beyond frustrated and have missed several deadlines. If anyone has a better solution... I'm all ears!

I've been having total system crashes lately too, running InDesign CC 2017.

To be sure it wasn't anything else:

  • All third-party plugins removed.
  • MacOS updated to latest (10.12.4)
  • Font files checked, and caches cleared.
  • Disk Utility and System Diagnostics Run (no anomalies besides permission repair). Both in recovery and standard mode.
  • All previous versions of Adobe apps (CS6) removed, as well as supporting files in the ~/Library folder
  • Creative Cloud app uninstalled, and reinstalled.

Stil, with all of this, I'm still getting crashes, even with relatively simple documents that were created in ID CC2017. When this happens, it's a complete system freeze--even the haptic trackpad is unresponsive.

Any thoughts?

Turn off GPU acceleration. While it is virtually impossible for an application to take down the O/S, Adobe has somehow manged to accomplish it.

FWIW, Adobe software itself isn't responsible for the hangs and crashes associated with use of GPUs. We see similar things happening on both Windows and MacOS and with not only Adobe applications, but Microsoft applications and surprisingly enough WinZip (which also has GPU use capability).

The problem is that application programs that use GPU services access them via system level drivers provided by either the OS provider and/or the video card / GPU provider. That's where the hangs, crashes, and/or visual anomalies occur!

I also did a search on the issue on the Apple support forum, and didn't see it. So, I added this issue and crosslinked, asking specifically if there are GPU driver updates coming.
