Indesign crashes every time I open Story Editor. Why? I have the most up to date version for 2020 Macbook Air, Apple M1 chip, 8gb memory.
Hello - I have you your own thread.
It's best to keep issues separated to ensure that you get the help specific to your issue and not someone elses.
Try resetting your preferences:
The easiest way to reset everything is to delete the InDesign preferences: as soon as InDesign starts to boot hold down Shift, Alt, Ctrl (and Apple/Cmd if working on a Macintosh). A dialog will appear asking to delete the InDesign Preferences, select 'Yes' on this dialog.
Further info and instructions here if needed:

Then I was able to save it as a template again, and base new files on the rebuilt template.

I tried this, and it still crashes.

OMG this is absurd.... not only crashes indesign but somehow forced restart on my computer..... it messed up the whole OS wwhen I tried to use story editor..... I also provide training for other designers and today I asked them to use it.... story editor broke their OS too.... why would they release a version like this..... if the story editor was missing for a while with a note on it I would understand..... my whole system is down and all my students are mad at me. and this thread is from months ago

What version of InDesign?
What OS?
It's impossible to know why it's not working without basic information.
Have you updated to the latest OS?
Are you updated to the latest version of InDesign?
Are there 3rd party apps interferring?
I use the Story Editor daily and never have an issue.
Please let us know how we can help.

None of that tells me your version.

this is ridiculous...... especially when you have to pay a monthly subscriptioin

this is maniacal. I have deleted my preferences checked the OS etc. I haven't yet deleted indesign and re-installed but this is deeply flawed. I lost all my work and this nuked my class. I really expect a monthly subscription software to be better than this

we have production deadlines..... now I am just telling everyone never to use story editor? which before hsa been essential.

If this were a widespread issue more people would be reporting it. You've not only hijacked a 3 year old discussion (which means many won't even see your issue) but you've given us relatively nothing to go on.
"current" is meaningless so I strongly suggest starting your own discussion with full details along with actual version numbers of the O/S and InDesign. Screenshots might prove helpful as will knowing if this is happening with all files or just one and if it's any particular fonts being used.

This has being going on for a while (check out the date when this thread was started). The only way I found to stop this from happening is to not use the Control Panel, which is absurd.

well I have finally been able to pull up the story editor again after deleting preferences, shutting down and restarting. but wow do I feel like garbage charging people for class today. we all had the same issue and it was a huge waste. If adobe wants to make a pop up that says, yo we updated, please delete preferences and reboot I would do that. this software should be a little more usable for the price of a subscription

It's highly unusual and you don't have to do all that normally.
Sometimes things don't work as expected. That's part and parcel of everyday usage of a y software.
The other day Notes stopped working and I had to jump through hoops to get it back working.
I can't help any further there are things that stop working from time to time and figuring out how to fix it is everyday for me.

I had this problem too, and I tried all of the suggested fixes. The only thing that worked for me is to turn off the Control Panel, which is really inconvenient. Adobe shouldn't be making software that conflicts with itself.

wait what is the control panel?
I honestly do not think it would be hard for adobe to add a compatability pop up since we have to have a continuously running adobe cloud software on deck at all times with full system access, lol.

If this was widespread there'd be 1000s of reports.
Today is the first day I've heard of this and I'm on the forums everyday.

You responded earlier in this thread, which was started in 2021, so it's been happening for a few years. I have had this problem and got no help from Adobe. It's not new, and it has been reported.

If it can't be replicated then it can't be a bug.
Unless we have exact steps and can reproduce the bug everytime then it's gonna be tough to fix.
And it's impossible to know why it's happening as basic questions like version numbers are being met with resistance like answers or 'latest' which tells us nothing.
It does not help to be vague.

And then nobody reported anything for three years. Whatever you're seeing is not a bug and if you want help you're going to have to answer the questions posed to you!

Hi BobLevine,
How do you know this hasn't been reported anywhere else? I'm sure that other people have given up on this issue being fixed, just like I did. It's not acceptable that I can't use Story Editor and the Control Panel at the same time. I would call that a bug. Unless developers made it that way on purpose, which would be a very bad decision.

One more time...if it were a bug, everyone would see it, but like the other poster here you refuse to provide details.
I have no issues at all with the story editor and neither do most other users. If they were there would not have been a three year gap between reports and there would be many people posting about the issue.
And again...if you want help, start a new discussion. Hijacking three-year-old threads to say, me, too with nothing else to go on will get you nothing in the way of help here or anywhere else for that matter.

If details can't be given after being asked again then this thread will be locked.
It's 3 years old. If you need help, post a new thread and be specific about your computer specs, operating system, and version of InDesign.
This is going nowhere fast.
