Indesign - list of contributors in a cookbook

Explorer ,
Aug 19, 2017 Aug 19, 2017

I'm layout a cookbook in Indesign....and would like to create a list with page numbers of the recipe contributor (person who wrote the recipe).  What is the best way of going about doing this.  Thanks in advance for anyone answering this question!

Looks like you turned off allow pages to shuffle and allow spreads to shuffle. Re-enable them from the pages panel.

You want to create a type of table of contents. Read about it here:

Create a table of contents in Adobe InDesign

You can make a table of any kinds—table of contents, table of illustrations, in your case a table of contributors.

The key thing is that you must have the name of the contributor formatted in a particular paragraph style. That is how InDesign know to include it in the table of contributors. (If necessary, it could even be "hidden text" on the page where you want the page referenced.)

Feel free to ask more questions as you try this method out.

Steve,

Not really sure it's the more interesting way [for different reasons about the result of the use of the TOC feature)!

This seems to be more cool! …

This script is called "Grep-Index"!

Obi-wan,

About 98% of the users that I teach don't know GREP. For those who do, you method is cool.

The Table of Contents feature is built-in and easier to use for most people.

Steve,

How do you sort the contributors by "Last-name, First-name"?

How do you manage a same contributor that appears several times?

Last thing: you know I've a small knowledge of Grep! … So a "free" Grep-Index support won't be really a time problem for me!

… You can send me 100% of the users you teach! … They could fix this question in 1 second without knowing Grep!

And not only for cookbooks! …

What the video doesn't really show is that the InDesign basic index entries are created in back-ground by the script and the Index text is automatically generated and flowed [just need to define its settings]!

So, Yeap! … Grep-Index is truly cool … for all of us who prefer to cook rather that make layouts!

Steve,

This maybe a really obtuse question....but to create an alphabetical listing of the recipes (which I would call an index since it goes in the back of the book)....what do I do to tell Indesign to put in at the end of the book.   Is an index the same thing as a TOC...just with another name?

Thanks so much for your help!

Hi,

Post a screenshot of what you expect and sure! Steve will tell you if it's a TOC or an Index you need and how to do it!

Sorry, but I have to bow out of the conversation. I'm packing today for a long international trip. There are many other InDesign experts (some with more experience with long documents than me) who can help out.

Page Panel...isn't flowing as normal.  see screenshot.  I don't have any errors in preflight.  Is there a way of moving the pages flowing out to the right ....under the others....any ideas....Any help will be most greatly appreciated.

Very cool for the other guys who tried to help you previously!!!

I just don't see the relationship with the original question and I'm surprised Bob didn't make into his answer some comments in this regard!

I'm a little surprised too, Obi-wan.

My posting #1 above was based on the way I learned to make a table of "whatever". In the Help file that I referenced, here is the first paragraph:

"A table of contents (TOC) can list the contents of a book, magazine, or other publication; display a list of illustrations, advertisers, or photo credits; or include other information to help readers find information in a document or book file. One document may contain multiple tables of contents—for example, a list of chapters and a list of illustrations."

I still find it the simplest and easiest way for most ordinary mortals to do it.

Sorry. I do most of my work via email. I just saw the question and answer it.

I usually do pick up on this kind of thing. I'll go sit in the corner now.
