InDesign v18.5 won't quit after a document is opened and closed.

Hi, updated ID to v18.5 yesterday... and since then I can work on documents and in the program fine as usual. But once I'm done and the document(s) is/are closed, InDesign won't close, have to force quit.

The issue doesn't happen if I just open the program and won't open or create a document - but once a document is opened or created and closed, the program itself won't close.

Resetting the preferences and dumping the caches didn't help either. Running Win 11 Pro x64. Nothing else is changed except ID got updated yesterday to v18.5.

I don't want to uninstall and reinstall because it's not a 'major' issue - just posting here so it's known and hopefully they will fix the bug in the next update. Thanks.

I reported the same issue last week (https://community.adobe.com/t5/indesign-discussions/indesign-18-5-win-does-not-close/td-p/13983862 ) and going back to 18.4 solved all my problems.

UPDATE: Just updated ID to v19.0 (2024) version and this problem has been fixed now, thankfully. So, it can be updated to v19.0 safely.

Same issue here ... I guess ADOBE is working on dropping desktop apps. We all will need to use the cloud and feed Adobes Ai - so it becomes smart enough to eliminate most of the graphic designers with a #describe & get" service that end clients can subscribe to in the future. All profit to ADOBE - bye bye graphic designers! This must be stopped!

Hi @Thomas27568138g2ae,

Sorry to hear about the trouble. Please try the suggestion shared in this similar discussion, and if it still crashes while quitting the application, please collect system logs and share them with me through DM by clicking on my name.

Thanks

Same issue here, reverting to 18.4

Hi @Kiran Qureshi and @Olivier Beltrami ,

I'm on Windows 10 with my German InDesign 2023 version 18.5.0.

And I cannot see the issue. The same with InDesign 18.5.0 on macOS 12.6.5 or macOS 12.6.8 on a different machine.

Well, I said, that I cannot see the issue, that InDesign 18.5.0 will not quit after I'm done, closed all documents and used the menu command to quit the app.

But now I can see the issue.

The difference: No connection to the internet.

Machine:

MacBook Pro 18,1

Processor: Apple M1 Pro

RAM: 16 GB

macOS Monterey 12.6.8

Hi Laubender, I'm always connected to the internet... so I just tried with no internet connection and still the same issue on Win 11 Pro. So, I guess it doesn't work the same way as Mac. Thanks for updating though, hopefully they will release a fix soon.

I'm pretty sure your post was one of my reasons to hold off on the upgrade, @Olivier Beltrami. 😊

Are you using any third party plug-ins with your InDesign? If so make sure that they have been updated for the latest InDesign version as well. In the past I've had similar issues especially when using auto-activation with a font management app. The fonts were trying to close when InDesign was closing and really held things up.

Based on comments I have been seeing here over the last week or so, I've decided to hold off on the 18.5 update. I know Steve has a similar system to mine and his is working fine, but it's making me nervous.

You can roll back to 18.4 in the CC Desktop app, if you like.

Often when you get a new InDesign update, it's necessary to restore your InDesign preferences and caches. Here's how to do that:

Thank you, Steve. But, unfortunately, that doesn't help. As I already stated above, resetting and clearing the cache and preferences had no effect on the issue. Moreover, this wasn't the first time it got updated you know 🙂 Every time there is an update, it gets updated and every time works flawlessly as expected without me having to do anything.

I'm sure there is a bug somewhere... just hoping they are aware and will release a fix soon.
