Involuntary Moving while Clicking

Whenever I click on an object in Indesign, whether it's a text box or an image or a rectangle, it shifts to a random direction very slightly and I have to undo it to have it go back in place. I'm only clicking to update the shape of something or the position or the style or the text but it involuntary shifts the location for me whether it's up, down, left, right. Why might this be happening? The same thing happens when I use my trackpad and my mouse. I am certain there is a problem or a misconfigured setting in my Adobe Indesign. I have also reinstalled Indesign and also installed an older version yet it continues. This problem does not happen on other Adobe programs that I have used. I've also recently switched to a new macbook, my previous macbook did not have this problem.

MacOS version: Sonoma 14.2.1 (23C71)

No guarantees but there have been problems solved by updating to the latest version of Sonoma. The current version is 14.3. Please update to see if that has an effect.

And if that doesn't work, try restoring your InDesign preferences and caches. Here's how:

Thank you. I've tried both of these options and the issue prevails.

I would look at the fine details of your mouse configuration; too sensitive a setting, or too low a hysteresis setting, will make a pointing input maddeningly jittery. It may well be that ID somehow is more sensitive to these excessive inputs or that your use pattern makes it more noticeable on ID, but I can think of very few reasons why the app, by itself, would exhibit this kind of behavior.

I will take a look but this problem also happens with my trackpad.

Hi @otterswims:

So is your new MacBook an M2? Is that when this started? InDesign doesn't have controls for this, but macOS does. If Steve's suggestions don't work for you (and hopefully they do) then I agree with James. Play with your mouse and trackpad settings in the Apple menu > Settings.

Personally, I rely exclusively on the trackpad on my MacBook and don't ever use a mouse. In this environment, I prefer to change the trackpad setting to Tap with one finger. That makes it is so much easier for me to select something. Maybe that will help?

My new macbook is a M3 Pro. My previous was a macbook air. I've played around with these settings but no change. I also do have my trackpad set to Tap with one finger. I'll keep tampering with those settings and see if anything changes. Thank you.

Mouse settings can be a little cryptic. For example, I've nearly aways run Logitech pointers (under Windows) and the two settings that make the most difference are "Pointer Speed" — which is fairly obvious — and something usually called "Acceleration," although I think Windows itself calls it "Enhance Pointer Precision." Its function is to give the pointer variable speed, so that (especially on a large monitor) you can move the pointer fast with small but fast inputs, while slower inputs move the pointer much smaller proportional differences... like slowing down for a turn. I don't know Mac settings offhand but I'd guess that your new machine has a fairly fast pointer speed set, whatever you think is optimum, but does not have this "slowdown" or "precision" feature enabled, so even your smallest inputs are fast and jittery.

Maybe someone who speaka da Mac can give more, uh, precise, uh, input here 🙂

I am having this exact same problem on a Macbook Pro M1 - it only started happening in the last few months.

It's sending me bananas... Has anyone found a solution?

And I am using Magnet! I'd like, to know how Magnet affects it? I've had Magnet for years, no issues in the past.

Yes, the problem was with a third-party program used for security that interferred with my indesign. They pushed an update out and that fixed it for me.
