irregular line spacing

Contributor ,

Hi everyone,

Can someone tell me why I am getting this irregularity in the line spacing and how to control and avoid this from the paragraph style?

Since that's the only bold line that breaks it looks to me like the bold style has a larger leading than the regular text and setting it the same as the regular text would probably solve the problem (and I don't think adding a forced line break will help, but could easily break things more).

As far as creating new styles to use in the TOC, that's always best practice.

I suppose that some single characters have a different leading which is applied to the whole line. Check the leading of the italic caharacter or their character style.

It looks like it's not the Italic, it could be the bold text, but I if change that, the whole document will be affected, so I will have to make a new paragraph style specifically for the content index.

I'm working from a template that wasn't created by me in first place.

Do you know how to set the fixed space on top of the paragraph box? (I've been looking for tutorials on how to do that but still can't find an aswer)

What happens if you insert a soft return after the word "TO"? Does that fix the spacing?

Also make sure that "Apply Leading to Entire Paragraph" is checked in the Type section of your InDesign preferences.

To get that space between the Contents title and actual table ytou can add a value for Space After to the heading or split the text into two threaded frames.

@Peter Spier I agree both your options can work, but how can one replicate the example in the picture?

It looks to me like the picture is showing a second text frame super-imposed on top of the main frame holding the TOC, and that frame has a text wrap applied. If that's true (really need to see the whole page to get a better idea), that's a really awkward way to do it.

Hi Peter,

I still didn't solve this, but it looks to me like there isn't a second text frame super-imposed on top of the main frame.

and there are not groupped items. it seems like something else

OK, this screen shot looks like maybe text wrap is applied to the selected frame with a negative value set for the top offset.

It could be useful to see the actual file if you're able to share, or at least this page.

There is no text wrap applied to the text box.

I can't share the file and more than very small portions.

This is what shows up on the toolbar when selecting the text box

At this point all we're doing is making wild guesses based on partial captures of what you see. We really need to see the actual page. If you can't share that page as a standalone file I don't know waht else to tell you.

You can send me a private message and I'll send you an upload link so you don't have to share with the world.

The soft return dosen't make any difference, also "Apply Leading to Entire Paragraph" dosen't seem to make any changes.

However, changing line spacing, as you can see below affects the paragraph style. And the result is different:

Ok, I've changed the spacing of only one line, which I've tried to do in the past but didn't work.

also "Apply Leading to Entire Paragraph" dosen't seem to make any changes.

Hi @Good Venture , Checking  the Apply Leading to Entire Paragraph Preference would only affect future edits, so if the lines within the existing paragraphs have different leadings nothing would change
