Open IDML file in InDesign

Explorer ,
Jan 17, 2024 Jan 17, 2024

Hello,

I was supposed to translate an INDD file from InDesign in SDL Trados, so this file had to be saved as IDML file.

Now that the translation is complete, I need to open this IDML file back in InDesign (i.e. import it). It is a catalogue that should be printed next.

How should I do it, please?

I have no experience with InDesign.

Thank you very much.

The IDML file should be on the very same place as its INDD original was, when the origina, IDML was saved or exported. Otherwise  the Font folder fonts and links ma not be detected correctly. Then you can open it as it would be an INDD file. Save the opened file now as iNDD on the same place. Take care not to overwrite any needed existing INDD file. Give it a new name.

The first thing to do is to ensure that you are marking text as English or German or Slovak correctly. The User Dictionary settings aren't the right place. Here's where you would select it if you were just taking a paragraph and marking it as German (two different locations, same setting):

Thank you all for your replies, but I would like to ask a quite urgent question now: I have the 7-day free trial version of InDesign and when I try to set English as the language of the User Dictionary for hyphenating words, the setting always returns to the default English. I right click on a word in the text, then Spelling → User Dictionary → Language: Slovak → Add → Done. The point is that I need the German client to get the text with split Slovak words right - so that e.g. he doesn't have German as the default language there, as a result of which the Slovak words could possibly be split incorrectly and the Slovak language could not be set for hyphenation. Could such a thing be a real threat, please? How could this be prevented or set up correctly?

Thank you

Once you've marked text as German (or Slovak) then the spellcheck and hyphenation settings should work. This isn't the best way to do it, of course, but we can't tell if your client's designer made paragraph and character styles correctly. If they did, you should be able to just edit the paragraph styles:

Hello,

I am currently reading this post https://helpx.adobe.com/sk/indesign/using/text-composition.html#hyphenate_text , and I cannot seem to find the mentioned Hyphenation settings in my free-trial InDesign version:

Miriam348_0-1716802936987.pngexpand image

I mean, I checked the "Hyphenate" box in the Paragraph menu, but I do not see the Hyphenation settings anywhere:

Miriam348_1-1716803085082.pngexpand image

The three dots on the right would just show fewer options.

Because I need to align/justify these rows as all other rows in the paragraphs, but I do not know how yet...:

Thank you for your advice.

Work through your paragraph style settings and you will find everything.

I tried increasing and decreasing indents, justifying and aligning the individual rows, but it moved only the whole paragraph, not the indent in the specific row.

Hello, Mr. Cherney,

how can I please adjust the distance between the rows in paragraphs 2 and 3, so that it is the same as in paragraph 1? I tried various options in the Paragraph menu, but it did not work.

Thank you for your advice.

@Miriam348

You need to set exactly the same LEADING.

I set the same leading, but the distance between the rows is still different.

Same or different TextFrames?

Then there is Align To Baseline grid - in ParaStyle definition and for each TextFrame:

Same text frame. Thank you, but I managed it thanks to Object → Text Frame Options → Align → Top.

I would also like to ask if the leading is ok in this picture: I tried setting the same leading for the 3rd and 4th line (13 pt, same text frame), but they did not look the same after that. So then I set 8 pt for the 4th line, and it looks the same now. My question is if the leading will really look the same with these 2 different settings in the final file in RGB and the print file in CMYK.

So you had it set to Justified?

Leading should be set "globally" for the whole Paragraph - and you should use ParaStyles - not "playing" with each individual line of text.

1. Yes, Vertical justification → Align → Top

2. At the end of the 3rd line, I pressed Enter, so that the words in the lines are distributed more evenly.

I have not worked with Parastyles yet, will look them up and try.

Working with / using Paragraph Styles is a MUST.

Otherwise, you are dead in the water.

Then there are Character, Object, Table and Cell Styles.

Could it be, that each line is separated by a return? This would make each line its own paragraph. Remove those returns and replace them with a space.
I think you problem with the wrong intents is caused by the same false handling with returns instead of using spaces.

@Willi Adelberger

You are right, there is a return after 3rd line.

So since it did not work otherwise, and I had to set both 8 pt and 13 pt (leading) because of the "Enter" pressed after the 3rd line (so that the last word does not protrude), will the lines look the same in the print version as well, please?
