Paragraph Justification issue while using single line composer

Explorer ,
Aug 14, 2023 Aug 14, 2023

Hi All

I could not resolve the justification issue while using single line composer and the word should not be break at the end of the paragraph. I have not used any word space between the word "my" in my document. Here I do not want to split the content. could you please check and let me know this is bug? or can resolve? how? (tracking not allowed, should not remove Discretionary Line Break, Shift break not allowed)

I have attached the screenshot and IDML file here for troubleshoot.

Regards,

Sathis

Given your reported client spec, you still have lots of freedom. I am in my heart in complete agreement with the sensible advice of all of these seasoned designers ("tell your client that their rules have revealed some deficiencies in the Single-Line Composer that lead to paragraphs that just look terrible"). However, I also sometimes have clients with inflexible rules that lead to ugly layouts. I'm writing this while chuckling about Peter Kahrel's book that is too good to put down, despite the poor typesetting.

You can use some of these freedoms (stuff your client failed to forbid) to abuse that paragraph into respecting your client's specification. For example, you can't use tracking, but the Justification dialog makes inter-word spacing & glyph scaling extremely easy to do. Now, usually I'd never suggest "why don't you distort your client's type, instead? Just set it at 97% width and No One Will Ever Notice."

But hey, why don't you distort your client's type, instead? Set the whole paragraph to be between 97% and 100% width; that'll buy you the flexibility to set type the way you think looks best, and it won't violate your client's spec, and No One Will Ever Notice.

(unless, of course, Don't Distort the Type with Glyph Scaling is another unmentioned part of your client's spec, in which case maybe inter-word spacing will do the trick.)

It's only a crime if you get caught, right? ;7)

Oh, it's still a crime all right! But if you don't get caught, then there are no consequences. So I guess you'd need to ask what's more important to you - moral rectitude, or staying out of trouble?

Also 1000x thanks for the shortcuts, David, I can't believe that it never occured to me that those shortcuts would exist. I'll use them all the time, now that I know they are there.

As far as I know they're not documented anywhere, but they do get mentioned here every once in awhile. Really useful for copy-fitting narrow columns in newspapers.

I am wary of tweaking the Justification settings on the fly, so I just love ID's keyboard shortcuts for increasing or decreaasing word spaces for selected text: Ctrl+Alt+\ or Backspace adds or subtracts 20/1000 of an em. Set the Composition preference to show custom trackingkerning and you can see where you applied it.
