Not with shading and borders. You'll have to lay in a triangle graphic to get the notch.
Not as simple and organic, but you could also notch a text frame and lay it over a colored background frame. Not quite sure what would happen if you used text shading along with a notched frame —might be worth trying.

Trying to incorporate in a para style in menus. I have been using the above, but looking for something that can move with the item. Anchored doesn't work because it won't sit behind the copy (the flag is set to "overlay")

Yeah, oddly enough I am using a similar construction in the project in front of me (a presentation), and the only solution I've found is to basically do it manually. (I only have a few examples and can just cut and paste, so it's not really a running solution.)
Can you get away with something like background shading plus a big right hand border, with each of them different tints?

Understood, but unless Mike W has a trick I don't know about (entirely possible), there's no way to create angled or shaded borders with the Paragraph style tools. Only a bent frame comes to mind.

How about InLined TextFrame - with your text inside - or a table with two cells / columns - with extra graphic for the notch?

Yes it can.

Ah, hey, that's clever... but I don't see that it's auto-sizing to varying numbers of lines.
If any "entity" is needed, I still think a text frame with a kicked-in right side, set up to adjust for any number of lines, is the simplest.

Clever, but not I think, practical for a multiline paragraph, especially with a variable number of lines.

Multi-line? I got nothing coming to mind.

Text frame with vertical centering, equal inset margins, auto-size vertical, and a kicked right border:
All sizing is automatic. (These are a bit shaky, not all neatly tweaked etc.)

A nice approach if anchored objects is allowed.
