"G" key not working while typing InDesign 2021.

My "g" key on my keyboard has suddenly stopped working and I can't figure out how to fix it - the key works everywhere else so this is definitely an indesign problem and when I copy a "g" into indesign it shows up. Does anyone have any insight?

Probably won't help, but the first thing to try is resetting the prefs...

  • When you are not typing text, does "G" work as the shortcut for the Gradient tool?
  • When you are typing text, what typeface are you using? Does it work if you change the typeface?

No, the G doesn't shortcut to the gradient tool. As for typeface, I am using Century Gothic Pro. I have tried using other fonts, such as times new roman, and still the same issue.

Do you have access to an external keyboard? It's not likely, but it could be mechanical.

Yeah, that was a shot in the dark. Since I don't modify keyboard shortcuts myself, I probably won't be able to help, but I suspect that somehow the G key has been assigned to do something, but just looking at everything until you find it might take a while. Someone probably knows the answer, so stay tuned.

You can find out which shortcut any key is applied to by just opening the shortcut window and typing it into the field at the bottom. 'G' is gradient by default but you'll be able to see if it's something else.

I've tried looking through the shortcuts and unfortunately it doesn't seem like anything is assigned to "G" aside from gradient.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about your experience. Do you see this behavior with a specific document? What happens when you use any external keyboard?

Resetting preferences should help with this issue as suggested by @Peter Spier earlier. In addition to that, you may try the suggestions given on this community post. Let us know if it helps.

Regards,

Ashutosh

I experienced this problem today while working on one document. Each time I pressed 'g" it left a blank. I changed keyboad. Same problem. The I discovered that every tinme I pressed 'g' it moved to the basic paragraph style. So somehow an unwanted keyboard shortcut has been created. I closed this document and opened another and everything works as normal, soi the problem is specific to this one document. I have yet to resolve this

Hi Bryan,

Paragraph styles can be assigned to a keyboard shortcut, but usually with a modifier key — not a single letter. Can you open your Paragraph Styles panel and edit the style to see if a keyboard shortcut has possibly been assigned?

Thank you. What I have now done is ioen the basic pargraph style as you suggested and pressed the 'reset to base' button. The problem has now gone awat. I have no idea how this happened but I may have inadvertently pressed the wrong key, or combination of keys, while typing.

Again, thank you.

I experienced a very similar issue, but with the letter "r".  While typing the letter "r", the letter would not appear and would also change the paragraph of text to a default system font—in my case, Times New Roman. I solved the problem by taking the following steps:

(1) Rule out other causes. In my case, I tested other InDesign files and other programs to ensure the "R" button was actually working. It was. This meant that the issue was exclusive to my InDesign file. Note: I should have tested fonts between multiple files, but didn't think of this until later...

(2) Close InDesign and make any available software updates. I chose to NOT preserve previous preferences and do a fresh update.

(3) Locate the font in your font management program. I was using Mac's system Font Book.

(4) Uninstall the font that you are using in your InDesign file.

(5) Reinstall the font.

I'm not sure if this will work for all. I believe my issue was due to the font management software losing proper connection with InDesign. Either from prolonged use or leaving InDesign open and inactive for long periods of time.
