RTL Option Missing in InDesign

Community Beginner ,
Oct 06, 2024 Oct 06, 2024

I work with Adobe InDesign and other Adobe software, and I pay for the Adobe subscription. Why is the option that used to be there now missing?!!!! Where did the RTL (Right to Left) option go? Are you only accurate and precise when it comes to charging us at the end of the subscription period? You send thousands of notifications and emails asking us to renew our subscription, but you don't see the other messages and requests? There is no detailed information or assessment on this issue—why? You just keep saying, "It’s fixed, it’s being fixed..." I need this option: RIGHT TO LEFT.

If you need the option 'right to left' than download the correct version that supports this. Clearly you installed the wrong version for you.

Asking the question, here in a user-to-user forum, might have been more polite than ranting about a non-problem that seems to stem from your own mistake. Just sayin'.

By @ARTICREATOR

The volunteers on the user-to-user forum haven't sent you any notifications. If you want to make a feature request or post a bug report, the product developers will see and track it in another site called User Voice:

https://indesign.uservoice.com/

This is not a bug, though, as right-to-left has not been removed and Franz has already told you what you need to do.

I beg to differ. I'm pretty confident that it's not a bug in InDesign, though. I imagine it's bug in the Creative Cloud app, or in whatever part of the InDesign updater looks for the language setting in the CC app.

I always have my language in the Creative Cloud app set to "English (Arabic)" for access to RTL tools. But InDesign updates to US English interface around 40% of the time. The other ~60% of the time, it successfully updates to "English (Arabic)".

I see these posts here on a regular basis; the "Where did my Hebrew/Arabic tools disappear to?" post. I'd be willing to wager that, if ARTICREATOR responds to any of these messages, it'll turn out that just changing the language and updating the app fixes the issue. A brief look at ARTICREATOR's post history shows that they've clearly used RTL tools in InDesign in the past. So it's not a simple case of an angry user not knowing how to install the tools correctly; it's a bug.

A good answer, but it also seems the OP has been stewing about it for a year without asking any right source the right question... but could find this forum to rant in.

There are lots of little "secret unknowns" in the Adobe Suite. Good thing there's a body of informed users to ask about them. 🙂

I can't approve of the OP's posting style - it's not a great way to get help from volunteers, I'd say - but I don't think that the OP was stewing about it for a year. I initially saw this post attached to this thread, which admittedly was not the right place for it, but there was nothing about "a year" in that thread. I suspect that the title was written not by the OP, but by whatever Person With Administrative Access split the post into its own thread. And this action was undertaken with a fairly shallow reading of that thread, which was naturally about a different RTL bug in InDesign that took months to fix, including a whole dot release that didn't fix the issue.  Seeing the OP's comments in the context of that thread rather changes the tone of the post, for me.

At any rate, the fix isn't "install the right version of InDesign" as has been posted multiple times in this thread, but "always recheck your preferences before and after update, and be ready to re-reinstall a dot release if your settings are not respected." That is, from my point of view over here, not a "little secret unknown." It's more of a "known UI gaffe goes unfixed for years." There are plenty of those in InDesign, for sure, but I feel obliged to point out, repeatedly, that this is not a case of user error.

I'll concede your view of it as having more direct experience with the... flaw. Just one of those cases where there were several useful approaches, going back to a fix of the update process, and all were missed in favor of a misdirected rant.

I don't see where the OP was moved or renamed, though.

ETA: Also... any user with some experience should know that the MEL and CJK versions are "special" and enable those feature they find essential. Having a critical feature like RTL or ruby just disappear should not result in a first assumption that the feature was removed from InDesign. Or so I see it. I guess some users might sit down at one of the alternate language versions and never know there are two others. But that small bit of fairly basic knowledge would lead to at least asking the right questions, or so I think.

@ARTICREATOR see the instructions at https://www.qppstudio.net/webhelp_xv4/mena-version-of-indesign.htm to install the MENA version of InDesign (MENA= Middle East and North African Languages).
