Screen Flickering & Menu not opening Issue on macOS Sonoma

Hello,

I am fieldtesting macOS Sonoma and I encounter a few (very) annoying bugs with the latest Adobe CC apps (all up to date). For Photoshop I have the 2024 version, for all other apps mentioned it's the latest 2023 version of the app.

Bug 1: Adobe Indesign. The page is "flickering" when moving an object with the selection tool. This flickering can be avoided when hiding the "rulers" in Adobe Indesign with  CMD + R

Bug 2: Adobe Indesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop (2024 release): When moving a panel to a secondary computerscreen the submenu can no longer be accessed. When moving that panel to the primary computerscreen it works just fine.

Adobe (and I do hope Adobe reads this) … are these Adobe CC related issues, or something Apple has to fix?  For many professionals this will be extremely annoying if this doesn't get fixed. As I mentioned, I am only field testing this at home, … not in a production environment, as I have the policy NOT to upgrade right away. That's why I'm field testing.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @John Beeckaert ,

Thank you for sharing the file. We have already logged a bug for the two known issues on macOS Sonoma. We do have workarounds for both issues, so for the first issue wherein the screen is flickering, you can try hiding the rulers, or you can enable GPU from preferences. For the second issue, in which the sub-menu is not opening on an external monitor, you can create a new user account. I will update the discussion as soon as I hear from the team.

Thanks

@The Orchard Ellijay… you have 2 options for now to solve this for now.
1) If your monitor and GPU supports it (important, because that checkbox is not always checkable), you can check the box for "GPU Performance" in the Indesign Preferences
2) Hide the rulers with CMD+R if they are visible, or activate the "overprint preview".

Hi,

We're currently in the process of testing and optimizing our latest apps to run on macOS 14 Sonoma, more details here. You can check the system requirement page for InDesign to check the list of compatible operating systems. For information on known issues in InDesign, please check this article

Indesign 2024 is acting up. Every time I try to highlight text or grab anything, the screen flickers and turns white so I can't see my document anymore. I am on an apple computer with latest OS. It's impossible to work in Indesign.  How can I download the 2023 version again? When the app updated, it replaced my older 2023 version. HELP!!!

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.

Is anyone else finding that with Sonoma, when they try and select several items, the whole screen goes blank? It just started today when Sonoma installed itself. You'll see in the video that once I move the cursor to the left and select everything, it all goes white. Once I let go of the cursor it reverts. It makes it near impossible to work.

Other users report similar issues on Sonoma. Try to play with GPU Performance preference - it helped some users. If it doesn't help then you may need to revert back to Ventura as InDesign doesn't officially support Sonoma yet.

I can attest that turning on GPU Perfromace as well as the Zoom option under it worked to dispel the awful screen blanking when selecting/dragging bug.

This problem too for me. GPU Performance didn't work but holding down the S key did. For the sake of my S key though, please Adobe... can you sort this out?|!

I just posted the following in answer to a similar post. I'm reprinting it here in the hope that it will help:

"It is never a good idea to update to a brand new operating system. It must be kept in mind that when a new OS is being developed it does not take into account any third party software and how it will run on the new OS. Software manufacturers such as Adobe and others must always wait and see what is needed to make their product compatible after the OS is released. It's always a game of catch-up. I personally always wait several months (or even longer) before updating. In following this forum it can usually be seen when is a good time for updating. It's when the posts about InDesign and other programs not functioning properly with the OS trickle down to few to none. This usually happens after several OS bug fixes and compatibility upgrades of the software."

In your case I would also strongly recommend turning off auto-upgrades for your Mac. It is safer overall to make sure that you have a choice about updating.

hi Bill,

Usually this advice is golden, however with all the security updates, etc., people are more tuned in to having their systems as secure as possible - which means, for better or worse, having things "upgraded" to new software upon release.

not Betas of course... I think we allow software companies far too much leeway in accepting giant bugs, when they had quite a bit of time with the Betas to test and make known what works, and what doesn't. Simply not supporting a new version of the operating system when released is not what I expect from a top tier software company.

As far as security issues are concerned Apple released a "must have" security update to Ventura just last week. Even after Sonoma takes root Apple will continue to issue security updates for their most recent OSs. Before I got my brand new iMac a couple of weeks ago with Ventura, I was still getting updates to Monterey on my old outdated iMac. Given this I still feel safer hanging on to the more proven OS for the foreseeable future.

To your point about getting the software ready based on the Beta version of Sonoma. To me (and I must point out that I am not in any way an employee of Adobe) I don't think that it makes sense for a company to make changes to their software based on a version of a new OS that may or may not make it to release. That is what Beta testing is all about—trying out things to see if they work before committing to a final version. If Adobe were to prepare a version that would work correctly with an OS that might be released seems to me like a waste of time and resources—especially if there were last minute changes made to the OS. If Apple was forthcoming about releasing necessary standards for software to run on their new OS prior to its release then Adobe would not have to be constantly playing catch-up. In this case I think that Apple bears the responsibility for any program incompatibility.

Hi Bill,

Yes, I saw your post previously, and in the past, I have adhered to that same theory. However, with today's computer security climate, I fell into the same camp as the @germantown, where I did it to ensure security was updated to the latest and greatest. Lesson learned.

I have no options in InDesign to even turn the GPU on. So I guess I am stuck with this bug until Mac updates the software again. Lesson learned.
