Persistent Error in Adobe InDesign: ‘There Was an Error Updating the Artifact

Explorer ,
Jan 23, 2024 Jan 23, 2024

When I go to update a review link in InDesign, I keep getting this error message "there was an error updating the artifact". After that, the link does not work for most people. I am signed in to Adobe. Everything is up-to-date.... But this issue still persists. Can Adobe please fix this issue? It's emarassing when I go to send the review link to my leaders and they just get an error message when they try opening it.

I would like to add that my clients usually do not experience any problems opening the file with the link (even if I get the error message), but sometimes they do. Refreshing the page does do the trick in most cases if that happens. Now usually they are 'slow' in reacting on my update messages, so it is possible that they only experience problems opening the file when they react right away. I will keep an eye on that now, to be sure. So I support the idea of a lag/delay in the update process.

Hi All,

Thanks for your patience. The product team has tried multiple files and affected files shared by users. The issue is not reproducible for us even after multiple tries. It seems like an intermittent issue; it may work on the next or subsequent tries. Would you all mind trying "update content" once more to check if it works?

Also, the screen recording shared above by @Chris Tammar shows some unmapped comments. That shouldn't have happened. It seems an erroneous scenario led to unmapped co

Thanks for your patience.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your continued patience while we looked into this. I checked with the product team, and they've tested multiple files (including those shared by some of you) but weren’t able to reproduce the issue on their end, even after several tries. It seems to be intermittent, and in many cases, retrying the Update Content option works successfully on subsequent attempts.

The team also noticed in one of the shared recordings that unmapped comments were present, which might be cont

Hi @KatherineCausland and @J E L,

Thanks a lot for testing this and sharing your findings. I tested the behavior multiple times on my end but still couldn't reproduce the issue. I'm also checking this internally with the product team to see if they can reproduce it on their setup.

In the meantime, it would be really helpful if you could confirm whether this also happens with a newly created file. Please try creating a fresh document, share it for review, then make a few changes and update the same link to see if the error reappears, and share your observation.

Also, could you confirm where the affected file is saved, is it stored locally on your machine or on the Creative Cloud? I tested both local and cloud files but wasn't able to replicate the issue.

If possible, please share a screen recording showing the workflow from opening the file to updating the Share for Review link. It would also help if you could share one of the affected InDesign files for testing. If the file is confidential, you can send it via DM on the community using any cloud-sharing service like Google Drive or Dropbox.

Looking forward to your update.

Abhishek

Hi, I have the same problem over here. All my shared links stopped working over night. Yesterday we could work in the shared document, today we get an Error 404: Asset not found.

Everyone in the company is having the same problem. We only work with local documents. Even when we try to save a file again or create completely new links for new files, we receive the 404 error message.

Again the same problem as a month ago: Error 404: Asset not found.
And while there was some sort of fix a month ago, now the issue cannot be resolved using the usual methods.
Maybe it would be good if Adobe stopped experimenting at the expense of their customers.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for your patience and for sharing your observations. The product team is aware of this issue, and we’re actively working with our service teams to identify the cause and restore functionality as soon as possible.

In the meantime, it would be very helpful if you could share an affected packaged InDesign file where you’re seeing the issue. This will greatly assist our investigation. You can follow the steps here to package your file: https://adobe.ly/49DFNuj.

We'll keep you posted here once we have further updates. Thanks again for your patience while we work to resolve this.

Abhishek

Please stop asking users to provide files, screenshots, and other local data. This is not a local issue—it’s a problem with Adobe’s servers, and it’s Adobe’s responsibility to test and fix it. It’s unacceptable that working professionals are losing valuable time over this.

Same problem here, but I have not updated to v. 21. I'm using 20.5.0.48, and the links were working fine until yesterday. Yesterday a client informed me that a link wasn't working, but I was able to send him a new one that worked. Today I get the Error 404: Asset not found error on every link I've sent recently—none of them are working. I cannot share my files because of confidentiality clauses. But this is clearly an Adobe issue and not something on the user side, since so many are having the issue regardless of version. We need a fix TODAY, this is a work stoppage!
