I'm getting this issue where when I make any changes to text within a text box, like typing within it, cutting/pasteing, editing, etc. the text disappears. Sometimes it'll come back if I click out of the text box. Sometimes it comes back if I switch between normal and preview mode.
It doesn't happen every time, but often enough to be incredibly annoying.
I'm running:
Hi all,
Hi @Twall55,
Please click this link (www.adobeprerelease.com/) and go to the "Available Program" section to join the InDesign prerelease.
Then accept the Prerelease agreement and follow the steps mentioned below to install the
prerelease v17.2.0.9:
- Close InDesign
- Go to Creative Cloud Desktop and look for Prerelease in the Apps section. (If you don't see it, then please check you are login with the same email ID you have signed in on the Prerelease website. If it still doesn't show up, the
Install the 17.2 pre-relase. It has worked well for me on a 2020 M1 MacBookPro! See instructions posted above or see the tips I posted above that helped with 17.1.
Finally!!! I installed the prerelease (17.2) and the bug that persisted for far too long has finally disappeared. After 9 months of hard work, I was finally able to do one day of layout without any bug. A real miracle!
Not only did 17.2, reased this morning to North America, fix the text issue, it's also screamingly fast, especially opening files.
OK, done. NEXT!
Hi Sarah, updating to 17.2 fixed the text issue for my wife. She hasn't had it happen once since then, so far.
Have you updated?

I've had that. But not since I wiped my M1 and started over again from scratch. Unlike Photoshop and Illustrator, InDesign seems to be invasive to the OS. I could be wrong (usually am with this stuff), but a small list of issues went away (even after already doing the delete preferences dance) when I redid my system.

I'm having this terrible issue even after a complete reinstall, deleting all earlier preferences and all. Using an macbook pro 2020 M1 13", 8gb memory, with Monterey 12.0.1. I have 254 fonts installed, all were validated.

FIXED?
Last evening (10:41 CET Rome), I got fed up with this disappearing text problem and decided to contact Adobe Customer Support. It took a while, but I was able to connect with an Adobe Customer Care specialist, Jai Prakish, who was very helpful. I had to explain several times to him that the disappearing text problem was hugh and chronic and there were hundreds, if not thousands of Apple M1 users who were having the problem. I told him people are frustrated and angry with Adobe. I also told him I didn't want a fix for my individual problem, but a fix for everyone with an update. I also pleaded with him and Adobe to respond in this forum and let people know they are working on the problem. This is the message I received from Adobe this morning:
----------------------------------------------------------
Dear Robert,
Greetings of the day!
Thank you for contacting Adobe. We are happy to help.
We had a conversation regarding your issue that you were facing with InDesign application while typing in the text box and text disappears on Mac M1. We would like to inform you that the issue will be fixed in next update. (My bold and text size) You ac do following things to fix this issue:
-Close InDesign and unplug secondary/multiple monitor and then launch InDesign and check, if it works fine with this then connect secondary monitor. If your issue persist again with secondary monitor we suggest you to please work with single monitor until next update. (Next update will come soon)
- Reset InDesign Application preferences by following steps:
Please open below given location, then rename the InDesign version you are using with .old extension.
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\Version () Rename it to Version().old
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Adobe\InDesign\Version ().Rename it to Version().old
We will update soon on Community as well.
However, if the issue remains unresolved, please feel free to reach out to us and we will try our best to fix the issue for you.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
I haven't tried this yet to see if it works, but will do so and report back. From what I've seen in the posts on this issue, the problem isn't about a secondary monitor, but we'll see.
I hope this helps.

Funny how they gave you Windows file paths for macOS… but at least they'll FINALLY address this. Have considered switching to another App but Adobe's monopoly is too strong.

Ya, funny. The kind of laugh you squeeze out as you push away your now tear-filled soup.

Was this ever resolved? I've tried rolling back to the previous version of Indesign and reinstalling but I'm still not finding a solution.

Excellent! Teamwork makes the dream work.
Much appreciated, and the community i'm sure will also.
We can all have a small mention in this next update.

OMG - I HAD THE SAME GUY TONIGHT!!!
Seriously!!! Jai Prakish!! Sent me back to V17 which has NOT helped at all . . .
So frustrating. Do you think they all use the same name? This has been going on for over a year, before I got my M1.
UGH!

All my fonts were validated and fine so that is not the problem with me.

I purchased Adobe CC recently primarily to use Indesign and I also have this issue on both my Macbook pro (M1) and Mac Mini (M1). Extremely annoying to have to zoom in and out continuously to keep the text visible.

I too had this problem on the M1 MacBook Pro 13" However, Tuesday I received my new 14" Max MacBook Pro with 64gigs of memory and presto, I have not experienced the problem since. I have Illustrator open, Photoshop and InDesign and even Bridge all running at the same time and so far so good. I have always felt that the issue was a GPU memory issue and having only 16gigs of RAM on my old (like 4 months) M1 didn't help. OF COURSE you should not have to buy a $4,100 MacBook Max to run any program, much less InDesign. This is totally on Adobe. FYI the new 14" Max MacBook is astounding. Definately trade-in the M1 if you can.

Still experiencing this issue with InDesign version 17.0
MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020)
This issue affects all of my InDesign files and has been dragging on for ages. Keep expecting it to be resolved with the next upgrade. Cannot believe the lack of responsiveness from Adobe when it is effecting so many of their customers.

Thoughts?

My first thought is that you are "hijacking" someone else's post.
My second thought is why don't you do a feature-to-feature comparison and report back (in a separate post)?

I dont feel this comment is hijacking anything, it's a legitimate question/statement considering the issues people are having using InDesign on an M1 Mac. Fortunately i've not had to design a magazine or anything too word heavy (thousands of words) since this issue arose but i imagine that if i did the software would be almost unusable and i'd be pulling my hair out. If Adobe cared at all about it's customers this issue would have been resolved months ago but as it stands we're all still struggling using this software on a daily basis. Comments like this, on this specific thread illustrate how frustrated people are with this issue to the point where they are considering swapping to another platform and accepting all the workflow and adjustment problems that swap would bring.

All software from any company will have bugs
Some of these are caused by "dot-oh" version (not the issue in this case), OS changes (beyond the software companies' control), and in the case of Apple, a new processing chip.
Quark or Affinity have their issues with OS changes and the M1 chip too.

Hi all Indesign lovers.
Yesterday I bought a new 14" with 10GPU and 32GB instead of my new (Feb2021) 13" with 8GPU and 16GB.
And the problem has resolved. I think Indesign is to quickly developed and the problem for Adobe is in the GPU power.
So adobe please focus on the coding of how to use the GPU's in Indesign. I really think there is te problem.
Please solve it. It's not in the fontlibrary!
I had to buy a new computer to keep my Indesignproduction on pace.
I'm happy now but also 1,5K poorer.

Wait, I don't understand. You mean it's NOT the fonts and we don't have to delete the preferences?
This is heresy!

I'm becoming more and more infuriated about this problem. I'm trying to design a long service sheet and almost everytime I do something the freeking type disappears! I must scroll in and out to make it reappear. This level of support from Adobe is inexcusable! If I had a reasonable alternative, I'd use it. I've been using InDesign since it was Aldus Pagemaker back in the mid-1980s and I've never had such a problem and had to deal with the ineptness and inability of Adobe to fix the problem. All the lame solutions I've seen so far, don't work. Get with it, Adobe, you're making many of your users very angry.
