The "stupid page tool"

Community Beginner ,
Feb 10, 2025 Feb 10, 2025

Hi all!

I've noticed a huge amount of lamentations about the "stupid page tool" in Indesign online, but unfortunately I haven't found instructions on how to get rid of it anywhere among them. So is it really still not working yet? Does anyone at Adobe follow the needs of those for whom the software is developed? After switching to the new Adobe, I was surprised that none of the real problems were solved (objects don't snap to guides, color in text box is primarily for the box, start and end arrows don't work in Acrobat, home pages that are just to get rid off, etc. etc.). There are a lot of tools that everyone immediately shuts down because they are useless to 95% of users. One of them is the famous Page Tool. I would be grateful for an answer to this problem, or information on how to get rid of this extra annoying tool so I don't keep accidentally clicking on it. Thank you! 🙂

It's a problem for you - and useless for you - I use the Page Tool everyday.

It's certainly not useless.

The Page tool is tremendously useful. Before it was created, there was no way to have more than one page size or page orientation in a document. I teaach about it in my UC Berkeley Extension InDesign class about using it for creating multi-panel brochures and book and magazine covers.

I'd call it an intermediate to advanced tool and it wouldn't be necessary for working with simpler documents.

@Eugene Tyson, @Steve Werner

It's about ONLINE version of InDesign.

@robert, the poster didn't say there was an "online version" of InDesign. I think he was referring to InDesign online forums/social media by context.

I think it's about Adobe Express.

The Page tool works fine in InDesign. If that is not the tool you want to use, don't click on it.

Consider turning on Window > Utilities > Tool Hints and then when you click on tools like the "Page Tool" you can learn more about it.

Objects DO snap to guides just fine.

If you want to select the text color in a text box, use the Type tool.

If you want to select the text color in a text box, use the Selection tool, and also click the tiny T icon.

Start and End Arrows export just fine to a PDF in Acrobat Pro.

I'm not sure what you mean by a "Home Page"?

If you mean a "Parent Page" which used to be called a Master Page, here is some reading:

https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/parent-pages.html

An excellent self-paced study for you is "Adobe InDesign Classroom in a Book"

Also, many on this forum, including me, offer training and consulting.

@Mike Witherell

I'm pretty sure it's about online "version" - Adobe Express.

@robert,

The poster is talking about the Page tool. The Page tool is in InDesign. Is there a Page tool in Adobe Express? - I don't use Express but it seems doubtful.

I don't see a page tool in Express. I don't think the AI overview (which I've found to be inaccurate before) is referring to an actual tool, hence the quotes around page tool.

I'm pretty sure the OP was referring to InDesign since there is a separate Adobe Express forum. Also, I think the "online" mention was about posts in the forum and possibly other social media. After all, it would be pretty "stupid" to post an Express problem/complaint in the InDesign forum.

By the way, the InDesign Page tool is extremely useful but like all tools, it's only useful when you need it. For example, I never use the Pencil tool in InDesign but I wouldn't waste my time posting about it. Just saying...

Czesc, Robert!

That AI reply seems like a blended hallucination.

Maybe OP will tell us?

It is just located in a really inconvienient place!!!  Is there a way to move the tool to the bottom of the layout so I don't keep accidentaly selecting it while I am rushing thru deadline.

If i could just hide it or move it to the bottom that would be so helpful

If you are really in a rush, learn to use the keyboard shortcuts to select your most-used tools.

Can you post some screenshots?

And are you talking about DESKTOP version of InDesign - or Adobe Express?
