Turn off the "Store your documents in the Cloud" launch screen in InDesign 19.5

Because InDesign 2024 is always crashing, I have to close that launch screen eighteen times a day. Why isn't there a "Don’t show again” check box on it?

Hello. . .  Adobe? Are you listening?

I uploaded the Log Collector report at 23:08h. It’s almost 09:00h and I have not received a confirmation email about the upload status.

I assume that you shouldn’t run the Creative Cloud Cleaner without having the upload status first.

Hi @MaterLuporum,

I’m sorry you haven’t received a confirmation email after uploading the Log Collector report.

To help us assist you better, could you please provide some additional details?

  • Which version of InDesign are you using?
  • What operating system are you working on?
  • Is the InDesign app crashing, prompting you to submit the logs?

In the meantime, you might find this How to use the Creative Cloud Log Collector tool (https://adobe.ly/4cIFCfg) helpful for understanding the Log Collector Tool and what to expect after uploading the report. You may also find this Fix crash issues when launching InDesign (https://adobe.ly/4cIFCfg) & Use the Creative Cloud Cleaner tool to solve installation problems (https://adobe.ly/4cIFCfg) useful if you're experiencing crashes.

We’re here to help, and I look forward to your reply.

Thank you,

Abhishek Rao

Hi @MaterLuporum:

Ha. I wish everyone was that thorough when we ask for system information and procedures!

Unfortunately, nothing jumps out to me—you seem to have done everything right. The only remaining recommendation is to download the Adobe CC Cleaner tool and use it to fully remove InDesign and then reinstall it from scratch. The Selection tool becoming the Pencil tool is a unique issue, and points to a preferences corruption. The Cleaner tool may locate and remove something that you overlooked when you removed the files manually.

Please report back either way. What you are describing isn't normal, expected or acceptable.

I’ve done all the prep work required in order to run the CC Cleaner Tool: turning off processes in Activity Monitor, making copies of folders, and running the Log Collector Tool. My .zxp file’s status is SUCCESS.

Now I read that before I can run the CC Cleaner, the CC Desktop App must be uninstalled, and before I can uninstall the CC Desktop App, I have to uninstall ALL my Creative Cloud Apps. I have many older versions of CC apps that I do not want to lose, and the documentation says that only the (2) previous versions are available from Adobe for re-installation.

To my knowledge, only InDesign is corrupted. I have used Acrobat Pro while working on this project and it shows no signs of trouble; none of the other Adobe apps have even been opened during the period involved. I wouldn’t even know where to find all the files to related to all the versions of my apps. I have Time Machine backups of everything going back to the Pleistocene, but recovering all the installers may not even be possible.

Do I really have to uninstall them all just to reinstall InDesign? This is a nightmare.

Hi @MaterLuporum:

The good news... you found the InDesign forum. We can answer your InDesign questions.

The bad news... this is a new feature (still in beta) and changing the file location default in preferences (like Photoshop and Illustrator) isn't an option (yet). We are mostly users like you and not Adobe staff so we can't fix it. You can log a feature request here that the engineering team will see: https://indesign.uservoice.com/. I'd vote for it.

Now, any idea why you are crashing so much? That's not normal. If you care to share your system specifications, OS and InDesign version perhaps we can offer some advice. Are your files particularly long and complex?

InDesign v. 19.5.0.84

System Specs:
iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017)

macOS Monterey 12.7.5 (21H1222)

Processor: 4.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7

Memory: 16 GB 2400 MHz DDR4

Graphics: Radeon Pro 580 8GB

Task: Create an InDesign document that converts easily into an accessible PDF.

Description:

My document is long but not complex: 202-page novel

XML content acquired from PDF via Acrobat SaveAsXML (Acrobat Pro 24.2.20759)

Created (4) Parent pages: Front matter; Chapter openings; Chapter text; Chapter end pages.

Chapter opening and text page frames are vertically justified.

Created Paragraph Styles with names matching the XML element tags.

XML structure and element tagging done in BBEdit.

XML content successfully imported and placed onto InDesign pages and automatically styled by Paragraph Styles.

Please tell me how to send/post the Crash Report Logs for the last (3) days if you want them.

What happened yesterday:

The Pencil Tool hijacked the Selection tool for the 1st time when I was verifying that Paragraph Styles were Tagged appropriately for PDF. The only way to temporarily recover the Selection tool was to close the document and re-launch InDesign. “Temporarily” because at some point I would try to look at something in the document itself and learned that I couldn’t create a selection tool from kb shortcuts or choose it from the Tools pane no matter what I did including hitting the space bar as somebody else suggested on this forum.

The 2nd time, I was trying to add Document Content to an Article in the Articles pane. Same deal: I chose a piece of content and chose “View item” from the hamburger menu and discovered that I didn’t have a Selection tool anymore.

The same thing happened when the Articles pane labeled (2) of the imported content items as “text frames” and I tried to see what they were by clicking “Go to Item.” When I realized that outside of the Articles pane, the cursor became a Pencil, I closed the document and quit InDesign.

Whatever those (2) items were, they were _not_ text frames: after relaunching InDesign, I was able to delete them, but the Selection tool became a pencil within a few seconds.

  1. I quit all my open apps,
  2. cleared my user/Library/Caches,
  3. pulled com.adobe.InDesign.savedState and com.adobe.InDesign.plist out of my HD/Library and onto the Desktop;
  4. cleared the DNS caches, and
  5. Re-started my iMac macOS Monterey.

Re-launched an ostensibly virgin InDesign 2024:

  1. Re-configured the Preferences
  2. Re-configured the workspace and saved as a new one.
  3. Quit InDesign to make the configurations active and re-opened it
  4. Saved the User Settings
  5. Exported the User Settings

So far, so good.

  1. I re-opened my ID file;
  2. Began work on Master Pages (removing crop marks I created for the client); and making (2) layers invisible;
  3. Made the bleed smaller in Document Setup;
  4. Tried to export to PDF (Print) using a Preset.
  5. Error: overset on p.171
  6. No overset, just an incorrectly tagged paragraph (corrected).
    –> The Selection tool became a pencil again after fixing this problem.
  7. Saved the file.
  8. Tried the export again. Success! But I still have a Pencil instead of the Selection Tool.

I hope this answers your question. Thanks again.

How do you stop that truly annoying InDesign 2024 launch screen that wants you to store your documents on the Creative Cloud servers?

Why doesn’t it have a “Don’t Show again” checkbox or some other way to stop that thing from showing up every time I relaunch InDesign after it has crashed?

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.

Sorry, kglad. I couldn't figure out why I wasn't able to post to the InDesign forum. I won't make that mistake again. Thank you so much for moving it for me..
