Type tool is acting strange...

Explorer ,
Jan 23, 2019 Jan 23, 2019

My problem started when I was working on a document and found I couldn't alt-drag-duplicate a text box. I then tried to draw a new text box (dragging as normal) and found there was no type cursor; thus no type. You can type within an existing box but not create a new one.*EDIT - you can't type in type box if it is grouped with another object. The triple-click (to select all type) function isn't working either, once cursor is in the box.

Also unable to space-bar move around the document too (when zoomed in).

No issues with illustrator. Have tried working with new documents, amending old documents and even gone as far as a clean reinstall.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

When you reinstalled did you do it in the following manner?:

In the app section of your Creative Cloud desktop app click on the “V” next to the app’s (InDesign) name and choose the “Uninstall” option from the pull-down menu that appears. After you’ve run the uninstall then use the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool Use the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems  . Then reinstall the program through the Desktop app. Before you reinstall, trash all preference files (instructions below)

Have you reset preferences?

Restarted the computer?

What version of InDesign?

What OS?

Any keyboard, clipboard, or font utilities running?

Any keyboard, clipboard, or font utilities running? Nothing (I thought Keyboard issues - but works fine in Illustrator)

Before you reinstall, trash all preference files (instructions below) to make sure that your install is completely clean. Then launch InDesign and see if the problem persists.

To trash preferences on a Mac:

The User Library folder in which InDesign’s preferences are stored is hidden by default on most Macintoshes. To access it make sure that InDesign is closed and click on the desktop to launch a Finder Window (Command-N). With this window in column view follow the path User>Home folder (it’s the folder with an icon that looks like a house—it may have the user’s name rather than “Home”) and click on the Home folder. With the Option Key pressed choose Library from the Finder Go Menu. “Library” will now appear within the Home folder. Within the Library folder find the folder called Preferences and within it find the folder called “Adobe InDesign” and the file called “com.adobe.InDesign.plist” and delete both that folder and that file. When InDesign is next launched it will create new preference files and the program will be restored to its defaults.

The advantage of manually deleting preference files in this manner is that after you’ve reset up the program (make sure that no document window is open) to your liking, you can create copies of your personalized “mint” preference files (make sure that you quit the program before copying them—that finalizes your customization) and use them in the future to replace any corrupt versions you may need to delete.

This certainly sounds like a corrupt preference issue. And an uninstall/reinstall can leave these files behind.

Here are the instructions to reset preferences (Set preferences in Adobe InDesign then scroll down to: "Restore all preferences and default settings"  ). If that doesn't take care of it let us know your OS and InDesign version and we can offer additional instructions.

I followed the first part of your answer Bill and installed the CC Cleaner tool. This uninstalled all CC apps and initially didn't work (I still can't find the cache, preferences p.list files etc. for Mac) but on a restart it appears to be working again. Phew!

Even after deleting the Cache and Preferences, I still had the same problem.

I was able to correct it by holding Shift, Control, Option and Command down while opening InDesign.
