What is this line in between the words?

Can any one help understanding what the below line is? This is invisible when text is not selected and only appears when the word is selected. This is causing the words/paragraph to break in SDL studio when wherever this line appears. Doesnt look like any marker. Never seen this before.2023-06-26 10_59_37-MicrosoftTeams-image.png ‎- Photos.png

It looks like "Discretionary Line Break"

Remember, never say you can't do something in InDesign, it's always just a question of finding the right workaround to get the job done. © David Blatner

Hi George, thank you for your reply, it is not Discretionary Line Break as that was the first thing that came to my mind. I doubt this may be something related to version issue but not sure.

What happens if you delete "inset here” and replace it with intent in paragraph styles?

It looks to me like the cursor and is a screen draw artifact. Does it move if you highlight something else?

Hi Peter, it is not cursor mark, here's a screenshot with cursor. I am able to delete it completely but there are a lot of instances and will consume a lot of time to delete and type the content again in multiple files.

I'm not saying it's an active cursor, but rather a bad screen draw.

Can you share a small sample file that shows this? I'd like to see if the mark is present on multiple systems.

Thinking further, though, if it interferes with parsing and retyping gets rid of it, it's less likely to be an artifact.

Still like to see a sample if possible....

Apologies, I didnt understand you earlier as English is not my first language. I cannot share the whole file but can share some content which is affected. I have also noticed that earlier when I tried to replace it with new style it didnt make any change but now when I override the style the marker has gone. I look forward to hear from you.

No apologies necessary.

I don't have the DIN Next fonts, and they are not available from Adobe Fonts, so my test is not definitive, but I don't see the mark anywhere.

No Phantom mark.png

I think if this were truly an actual character of some sort it should appear even with a missing font, but it would be good if someone with the DIN Next LT Pro family could also test.

In the meantime, do you have another system available where you can open the file? What are your system specifications? If on a Mac, what happens if you toggle the preference to use GPU acceleration?

Another thought. What do you see if you look at the text in Story Editor (Ctrl/Cmd + Y)?

Hi Peter, I am using Windows, Dell Latitude 3600 laptop with 16 gb RAM, Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8265U CPU @ 1.60GHz 1.80 GHz, Intel UHD Graphics 620. Even I dont have the fonts installed, you have to zoom in a bit more in order to see the error and here's the screenshot of Story editor, nothing in it. zoom in atleast 300%

I'm not familiar with your studio program, but it certainly looks like it's being interpreted as a line-feed. How is the text moved from InDesing into the studio program?

SDL studio is a medium between the files like Indesign, Powerpoint, FM, Word, etc for translation. It converts the file into translatable format (.sdlxliff, .sdlppx, .proj) which helps the linguist to translate the file. It has also the facility to create translation memories for languages which is very useful when you receive a new file from client with similar content to pull the already translated content from Translation memory and we are left with very little content to translate. you can check more about this here: https://www.trados.com/products/trados-studio/

I don't see it even zoomed in 1800% in the sample you sent. Just to be clear, though, your sample file is not the same text you show in your screen capture, so are you sure the problem exists in the sample?

I continue to think it's a screen artifact, though, since there is no sign of it in Story Editor. I also think it's most likely due to your system specs which are at the low end of what is required to run InDesign.

A faster processor, more RAM and a dedicated video card would probably make a world of difference.

Hi Peter, I understand it may be the cause but why the words are breaking when converting the file to sdlxliff? InDesign application has nothing to do with SDL Studio but the file. I have no option left but to get the file manually translated.
Here's the screen shot of the sample I shared earlier with story editor, it is visible at my end.

Sorry for the long pause. I had some errands to run.

One more thing to try before you give up: export the file to .idml, open that and resave to a new .indd with a new name. Check to see if the problem is still there. .idml often removes minor corruption.

It's been quite some time since I have used any of SDL's products, but I am 100% confident that this is not an InDesign problem. In the Olden Days, this is the kind of thing we'd fix in TagEditor, after ingesting the InDesign file but before sending off to the translator. When you are showing the Studio view, the contents of the tags show you that it's a formatting change. However, if I export an IDML file and look at the stories in XML format, there just aren't any characters or formatting changes in the places where you're having formatting changes in Studio.

Here's a screenshot of the raw text in XML:

noline.png

I can drop this stuff into memoQ or Wordfast or any other translation tool capable of ingesting indd or idml, and I don't get this tagging problem, at least with the sample file you've provided. These formatting changes that are causing your tagging problems are not present in the sample you gave us. However, there are clearly formatting changes in the file you're dropping into Studio, as you say clearly here:

I have also noticed that earlier when I tried to replace it with new style it didnt make any change but now when I override the style the marker has gone.

If you could chop out the "Know your blood pressure" section straight out of your INDD and post that here, we could figure out exactly what formatting change is happening between "Y" and "ou, your carers..." but without that, we can only guess. That being said, my guess is that, if you fix your formats and clear your paragraph style overriddes, you can fix these undesired & invisible formatting changes yourself.

Hi Joel, that's strange because even Peter is not able to see the markers which I can clearly see. Give me sometime as I need to download the original file again. I'll share a page of that InDesign file in some time. I have managed to fix all the overrides yesterday night manually.
