My indd document was created in iD CS5.5. On opening in iD CS5, there is a popup which says that SharedContent plugin was used in the creation of the file. The popup then provides the option to proceed anyway. Will I be safe doing that, or is there a workflow for installing the plugin in CS5?
You cannot open an InDesign CS5.5 file directly in InDesign CS5. You need to choose File > Export > IDML and open the IDML file in InDesign CS4 or CS5.

You can send me the file. I'll put an upload link in a Private message for you.

I wish i didn't have to ask, but please check your PM. Why doesn't Adobe make the newer versions backwards compatible?

I also have an InDesign CS5.5 file that I need to be able to open in CS4. I was working at home one day without my laptop from work and downloaded the trial version of CS5.5, and now I can not open the file that I created. The file is located in my dropbox at the following link:

I am also unable to open two InDesign files. These are created in CS6 and my trial period has ended...
Can anyone convert these files (I already have them put in my Dropbox folder) to IDML so I will be able to open them with CS5?
Thanks in advance!!

Hey Peter,
I am having the same problem. I need to convert a cs5.5 to a cs5 inDesign file. Could I please send you the link to dropbox? Do you need the .indd file or the .idml file?
Thanks much!

Sure, send me a Private Message (click my name to go to my profile) with a link to your .indd file (zip it for protection). If you already have a .idml file that should open in CS5 without an issue, so perhaps it's damaged in transit, or your CS5 doesn't have the latest patch.

The .idml file you sent opens just fine in CS5 on my system, so if you are having a problem, it's your configuration. You must be patched to version 7.0.4 to open later version .idml.

Yes, it is odd. I was finally able to open it after a friend of mine opened it in his computer and changed the file name (for the indd file). Does this mean that the .idml file is still of use? even when the name is not the same. I'm sorry if this questions is dumb. This is the first time that I find that an indesign file comes with an .idml file, and I want to make sure that the file will not have any more issues.
Thanks!

File names have nothing to do with what is in the file, so sure. I rename files (usually by doing a Save As) to create versioning for backup all the time.

Ok! So, I can send both files back to the client, and he should not have any issues opening them. Right?
Thanks much for your help!

I never like to say a client won't have issues (especially when you are moving across versions), but I would expect the client could open the files, yes.

Yes, I understand. Hope everything goes smoothly.
Thanks so much for your help!
