P: Allocating GPS-Position not working anymore

The GPS-Positioning doesn't work anymore. I have installed the latest version of Lightroom Classic. When I start allocating GPS-Positions on the map, nothing happens. When I restart Lightroom it works for one or two images and then it stopps working again.

I've never had any issues with GPS-Positioning before. So, I wonder what the problem is.

Edit 05.02.2024: Please refer to my failure description in my comment below.....

I am on LRC-Version 13.1 and MAC OS 14.3!

Greetings all,

Updates for the Adobe Photography Products have been released.  The May 2024 updates contain an update for this issue.

If you do not see the update in your Creative Cloud Application, you can refresh it by hitting [Ctrl/Cmd]+[Alt/Opt]+[ R ].

Note: It may take up to 24 hours for your update to be available in your Creative Cloud app.

Thank you for being so patient.

Try going to the Library module, exiting LR, restarting LR, then going to the Map module. When you exit LR directly from the Map module, it can misbehave the next time you start LR.  This may not be the cause of your problem, but it's easy to try.

What version NUMBER of LrC? (We need the version NUMBER and not words like "lastest" or "up-to-date")

I have a comprehensive failure description now....you can follow this as well....

  • Go to the map module
  • Select 1 of your images
  • Search for the location "harvard university" -> is just an example!
    dirkz97066185_0-1707133574966.png
  • Right-click exactly on the yellow marker where the Harvard University is marked.
    dirkz97066185_1-1707133350422.png
  • Choose adding the GPS coordinates to the image (here in screenshot is German)

From now on the GPS-allocation doesn't work anymore, whatever you do. You have to restart LR that it will work again. At least it is the case for me.

I cannot reproduce this issue on my LrC 13.1, Windows 11 Home 22H2.

Please try resetting your preference file: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/

Ok, thank you to try it. Maybe it's an Mac-version-related issue. I am on MAC OS 14.3. Maybe there are some other Mac users who can try this?

Thank you, but meanwhile I know how to reproduce this issue...you'll find more information in my comment below. Would be great if you could check this, if you are also on Mac.

While you are waiting for Mac users to comment, please try my suggestion!

Also, I disagree with your logic that it is a Mac related issue. It works on my machine and doesn't work on yours does not imply the cause is the operating system. (That may or may not be the cause; other possiblities are that there is something in your LrC, like your preference file, that is the cause)

I can reproduce the steps you described in your post on LR 13.1 / Mac OS 14.2.1 but not LR 13.1 / Windows 11:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-discussions/allocating-gps-position-not-working-any...

See the attached screen recording, and see below for an easy workaround.

The proximate cause appears to be that when you hover the mouse over the yellow pin indicating the location of the search result, LR incorrectly pops up a black box that would normally display thumbnails of any photos assigned to that location. But in this case, there are no photos assigned:

johnrellis_0-1707149750592.png

A workaround is to close the black box by typing Escape. Then right-click the pin and do Add GPS Coordinates.

Some additional clues to the cause of the bug can be seen by running LR with the -tracebacks option.  When you hover the mouse over the search-result pin, you get the following log output of an "assertion failed":

2024-02-05 08:12:22.608 Adobe Lightroom Classic[12317:13831957] assertion failed!
    0: global assert - C

Then when you right-click the pin and do Add GPS Coordinates, you get an additional assertion failed:

@Rikk Flohr: Photography The allocation of images on a dedicated tracklog isn't working either. It did work in previous versions but currently it doesn't.

The issue hasn't been fix with the latest update of Lightroom Classic.

Version 13.2 for Mac.

BUT: What is working again, is the allocation of GPS-data by tracklog.

I also encounter this issue intermittently (Lightroom Classic 13.2, MacOS X 14.4). @John R Ellis's suggested solution of changing to the Library module and then restarting Lightroom resolved the issue for me (at least for now).

Incidentally, I have found that even when clicking directly on the map and using "Add GPS Coordinates to Selected Photos" doesn't work for me, I am still able to set GPS coordinates by clicking on a Saved Location in the left sidebar.
