P: Crashing when writing caption metadata

Participant ,
Nov 09, 2023 Nov 09, 2023

LR Classic is frequently crashing in the metadata caption box. I can't reliably reproduce the issue, it just works for a while then LR disappears and then crash report window appears.

I do notice the text drawing in the caption box gets a bit flaky. Odd or just deleted text appearing then disappearing. MacOS's new caps-lock indicator gets a bit flaky too, before a crash.  I also have dynamic spell checking on, but that appears to be stable.

LR Classic version: 13.0.01

 Model Name: MacBook Pro

@Rikk Flohr: Photography, yes, I have keywords with accent. And based on your comment, I tested to put in "Title" and "Description" words with accent, and had the same problem.

I sent my error log to Adobe, so I think you can find it through my e-mail.

This bug is in Adobe's radar to fix it?

"I have installed the latest updates to LrC and to MacOS ... yet LrC is still crashing while entering Title and Description text. ... Lightroom Classic version: 13.0.2"

Unfortunately, LR 13.0.2 fixed just one bug:

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/fixed-issues.html

LR 13.1 is likely due this week or next. Until then, you'll have to continue with the tedious workarounds:

"This bug is in Adobe's radar to fix it?"

Yes, the official status at bottom of the first post says Bug: Investigating, and Adobe Employee Rikk Flohr's pinned reply at the top says, "logged a bug with the team".

I am on a silcon M2 Max on Sonoma Mac running lightroom classic 13.0.1 and I upgraded to 13.0.2 and have repeadly crashed trying to add titles in the metadata module.  About every 3rd image causes a crash.  I noticed with 13.0.2 that opening the keyword panel and clicking gave an all white keyword panel and the same in the title box in metadata so I when back to 13.0.1.  Still crashes but not as often.

@dave1268, "repeatedly crashed trying to add titles in the metadata module"

Dave, are you using a non-English keyboard, and do the crashes occur only when typing particular keys, e.g. the circumflex (^) or keys with accents?

If this doesn't match your symptoms, then you may be experiencing a different problem than described by this thread, and it would be best to start a new one so your problem doesn't get lost.

"I am using english only."

Does it happen only when you type particular keys?

No particular keys.

@dave1268, your symptoms are significantly different than the other reports in this thread, which are triggered by particular keys on non-English keyboards. I think LR 13.1 is likely to be released this coming week, and if your issue persists after that, I recommend you start a new thread with full details about your issue, including the output from the menu command Help > System Info.

I just updated to version 13.0.2 and I'm facing a problem for the first time ever. I'm trying to export files and put them in a subfolder which I'm trying to give a name in Greek. In English, there's no issue. In Greek I have an issue ONLY if I try to put the accent on a letter. Καπαγεριδης is OK while Καπαγερίδης brings up the message "An internal error has occured" -[__NSCFConstantString CharacterAltIndex:]: Range or index out of bounds". I've done this many times before with previous versions, never had an issue.

Not a big deal, just to let you know.

In Lightroom classic, on Library module, when I try to write a word with any kind of accent on any metadata field the Lightroom crashes. I already tried to uninstall and install it again and the problem continues. Any solution?

@nunomoreiraphoto, LR 13.2 is likely due this week or next, and hopefully it will fix this bug. Meanwhile, you'll have to use one the workarounds:

This problem no longer occurs in the new LR 13.1 on my Mac OS 14.1 when using a French keyboard with the Mac input source sent to French. I type circumflex and other keys and LR doesn't crash.

It would be good for others to report their experience on LR 13.1. (Verify you've updated by doing the menu command Help > System Info.)

Same issue here! Everytime we type an accent (in Spanish), Lightroom Classic crashes inmediatly.
We have two Lightroom instalations, my wife and me, we have two Adobe susbscriptions, one is installed on a 14" MacBook Pro and the other on a 13" MacBook Air, with M1 Pro and M2 processors, both perfectly updated and almost new (less than 3 months of use).
Never had an isssue before this.

@maxlalvelais, this bug was reported by Adobe as fixed in LR 13.1, and several people (including me) confirmed that. Verify you're running 13.1 by doing Help > System Info. If you're running an earlier version, do Help > Updates to install 13.1.
