P: Export & Import failing/crashing when Video is present

Engaged ,
Nov 06, 2024 Nov 06, 2024

Hello, since Lrc 14/14.01 I have not been able to import images from a favourite Win 10 folder.

Its where I keep all my misc stuff I download from the net, etc.

Its called "Downloads & Software".

I try to import a jpeg and the progress bar on the top left just hangs there doing nothing.

I can import images from other folders.

I just created a new folder called 'New Folder' - and cut everything from with "Downloads and Software" and pasted it inside "New Folder".

I tried to import a jpeg and the progress bar on the top left just hangs there doing nothing.

So there is an issue that it does not want to import from the root folder - yet it imports images from subfolders.

Conversely - if I go to the root of New Folder - select an image and right-click and choose "Open With - Lightroom Classic" - it again shows the import progress bar but it just hangs.

I just put "New Folder"  into another folder - and tried to import from the root of New Folder - and I cannot.

No matter what I name that folder - or - if I cut all contents and paste into another folder - I cannot import from the root folder.

EDIT: see reply below about video files

Hello,

I am using Lightroom Classic version 14.0.1. with Windows 10. Lightroom was working perfectly until a few days ago. The problem happens when I attempt to import new photos.

The first time this happened I was trying to import 1800 photos I had taken that day. It imported 1300 and the rest it couldn't import. The import bar (top left) would just sit there as if waiting to complete the process, but it would just be stuck there.  My first thought was that Lightroom had a size limitation for each folder, but later learned that there is no limit. I download my photos from the camera to an external drive. So when I import them, Lightroom is reading them off the external drive.  Thinking that something could be up with my external drive, I deleted the folder that Lightroom had created as it was attempting to import the photos, and decided to copy the photo folder from my external drive and pasted it onto an internal drive that is almost empty, and Lightroom imported them. I thought maybe that one folder got corrupted and that's why it was giving me issues. Next day I shot 8 photos and tested to see if Lightroom would give me grief again (reading them off my external drive), but the 8 photos were imported without any issues. Yesterday I took 400 photos and Lightroom imported them without any issues again. Today I shot 129 photos, tried to import them into Lightroom and guess what? Same problem, once again. The 'Import Files at their current location" bar is empty and the middle of the screen shows the message "Importing Files" (Please check out the attached image) If I click on the X to close the "Import Files at their current location" dialog, it then displays where the "Importing Files" used to be a message saying: "No Photos or videos were found to import". So I tried importing that same folder off an internal hard drive -since it had worked once before - but this time it refused to import it from that one too. So right now I am unable to import my latest photos to Lightroom. It won't import them from my external or internal drives. I should also add that when I abort the import process by clicking on the X next to "Import Files at their current location", it doesn't shut down Lightroom and I can keep using it, but if I close Lightroom it won't open again until I restart Windows 10.

I tried upgrading to the 14.2 version but can't, because it tells me that I need a processor with AVX2. So, for now I must keep using the 14.0.1 version.

I do my backups regularly, but don't use the cloud storage though.

Do you have any suggestions to fix this issue? Any help/input would be extremely appreciated, as right now I am unable to import any new photos to Lightroom.

Thanks in advance!

Ingrid

Update: Now I know why today's folder didn't import. I had a VIDEO in it. As soon as I removed the video from the folder I was able to import my photos without issues. So from now on, if I shoot videos, I will make sure to move them to a separate folder BEFORE attempting to import any photos.

Hope this tip helps!

Hi Ingrid,
Are there any videos in the folder you are importing from? I had a similar
issue and discovered it was a video file that was causing the problem. Also
I could not play video in Loupe mode.

Hi, has anyone managed to solve the problem? I'm now using version 14.0.1, but the import still doesn't work, unfortunately. Will Adobe do something about it, or can everyone with older CPUs no longer work properly?

Hi, I'm running latest version of Lightroom Classic, 14.4 with Camera Raw 17.4 on Windows 11 in a ARM processor (Microsoft Surface Pro).

If for any reason there is a .MOV file present, Lightroom will freeze any image processing. This means, for instance, if I try to import a folder with files coming from an iPhone, with mixed photos and videos, it will freeze during the thumbnail generation of the files to import.

After this, the import will just hang. And not just the import, any subsquent activity with the exception of navigating through the user interface will just not work.

I really don't care if I can use Lightroom with movies, but the fact that it hangs everything is a huge problem.

For the sake of it, I've installed a fresh windows 11 ARM virtual machine and with an empty catalog, and just pointing to the folder to be imported will hang.

After exiting Lightroom, the user interface will dissapear, but the process will remain in the process list. If I want to reopen Lightroom, I will need to end the process on the task manager.

Is there any workaround for the usage of MOV or just to prevent them from beeing seen by Lightroom? Of course I know that if I remove the files from the folder to be imported it will work, but if for any reason I select another folder with a MOV file....

Thanks,

@bcabral": "an ARM processor (Microsoft Surface Pro). If for any reason there is a .MOV file present, Lightroom will ... freeze during the thumbnail generation of the files to import."

This issue has a different cause than the symptoms most are reporting in this thread. Adobe lists the failure to import video on Windows ARM processors as a "known issue":

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/known-issues.html

Full "native" support for Windows ARM is a popular feature request:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-ideas/p-native-support-for-wos-copilot-arm-devices/...

If you upvote that idea (in the upper-left corner) and add your constructive "me too", that will make it a little bit more likely Adobe might prioritize full ARM support. (Lightroom Cloud is fully supported on ARM, but Lightroom "Classic" is legacy.)

Can be a wording issue, but the issue is during import while doing thumbprint generation to present the list of files to import, not when importing the file itself (never gets into that).

Also, I find it a little odd that I've been googling for this issue for the past few months, and never noticed this thread...

LATEST

New patch version today, same problem. A quarter in the century and it seems that handling files that hangs the application is still something extraordinary.
