Lightroom CC2015.12/6.12 was released today and should address this issue. Please update your Lightroom to the latest version and let us know if you continue to see the issue. Thank you for your patience.
Thank you for the tipp, John and for your caring, Smit! But I'd rather not reset my preferences, as the hassle might be bigger than to live with an overlapping filmstrip for a while. (Changing the language from German to English caused LR to create a new presets folder and obliged me to transfer all the presets from one to another folder). I'm confident that Adobe will fix the issue in a later update.

there is probably a bug in Lightroom on mac (at least in Sierra). When Window -> Show Tab Bar is checked and one restarts Lightroom the upper part of the filmstripe is cut. To resolve the issue one has to unselect Show Tab Bar and restart again the cut filmstripe you can see here https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2214640
Thanks also, Nikita. That fixed it for me too. First time I have experienced this issue in years of use of Lightroom. I believe I triggered it by some combination of turning off and on tabs along with switching screen mode from "full screen with menu bar" back to "normal", but not exactly sure. I think the bug must reside in the screen mode functions, as I had not previously paid much attention to screen modes - using loupe view with normal screen mode virtually all of the time.
I have this problem. Just started. I tried resetting preferences but I lost so much customized information in preferences that I decided I'd rather have a clipped filmstrip that have to re-customize my entire LIghtroom set up. When I threw way the new preferences and reinstalled the old preferences and relaunched LR, my problem disappeared. (Along the way learned that what I was really missing/what really nagged me was called the filter bar, and I made sure that show filter bar was clicked on.) Now everything is showing like I want it to. Might hold my breath and hope this problem doesn't replicate itself. I'm using a Mac, OS10.12.2 and Lightroom on the CC.
Hi Nikita, I had the same issue as Andreas, exactly like his screenshot, your solution of unticking the Show Tab Bar and restarting worked like a dream. thanks. I am using LR CC and Mac Sierra.
I believe this issue and the disappearing modules issue are related. Once I changed my view settings back to normal and relaunched LR I no longer had blackout, or disappearing modules, and my filmstrip was displaying properly again. Incidentally, I started messing with my view settings because after the update my filter bar was missing. I am using a Mac OS 10.12.
When I opened Lightroom today, the filmstrip was bigger than usual and is covering part of the toolbar so I can't access ratings and other things. I'm unable to adjust the size of the toolbar like I can normally do. I am using LR 6.8 and Mac Sierra version 10.12.3. I didn't change I thing since last night when it was working fine. Any ideas?.
I also have a missing rating row above the filmstrip. Am using the latest CC and latest Mac os. I am wondering if it is due to the "show tab bar" creating an extra row , and thus hiding the rating row. For me this has happened a few times and the solution is reset the preferences. But beware, each time you reset I think it defaults to 240 dpi instead of 300 dpi. So I have given the wrong dpi to clients ! oops . This problem wasn't resolved with the last cc update!
