P: Images not sharp unless I zoom in and out

if I go from one image to the next in the library or development module they often are not sharp unless I zoom in and out. It does not happen with every image but with a lot of them.

Funny enough the problem does not occur if I scroll through my images on LR 4 so it definitely has to do with the Classic CC version.

I am using MAC OS High Sierra version 10.13.4

Did you have "Use Smart Previews instead of Originals for image editing" checked in the Lightroom preference dialog? Uncheck it if you always prefer Lightroom to load and edit the originals.

Make the standard Previews big enough for your Monitor.

This is a known bug and has been reported to Adobe, but it has not been dealt with yet. Indeed super annoying. What works is to zoom in to 1:1 and then zoom out again.

Ok. What is the version of LrClassic that you are running?

Do you see any render difference by toggling the details panel on or off? When Lr renders the image at less than full resolution (1:1), the rendering of the Details panel settings including sharpening would be an approximation. Can you share a copy of such photos plus the settings online?

i have found a few scenarios where (for me, 2nd monitor) the photo does not fully render unless you do something to it. the 2nd monitor will show a less than sharp photo, so i do a quick + then - (brightness up and down) and then it snaps into place. I have found other cases when doing autosync on multiple photos that only the first photo gets adjusted but the others don;t unless "touched" (for example, running a cursor over them in the filmstrip at the bottom of the screen).

Simon,

I am running Lightroom Classic-Version: 7.4 [ 1176617 ]Lizenz: Creative Cloud

No render difference when toggling the details panel on and off

I am enclosing 2 png files. original from the library which is not sharp and a virtual copy which I zoomed in and out to 1:1 after which it turned sharp.

Sorry I took a day off last Friday and lost track of this thread. Are these preview discrepency shown in the library module or the develop module? I can sort of envision it could happen in the library module. Essentially when in the library module, for performance reasons, Lightroom would only render necessary sized preview that fulfills the windows image drawing request. If the standard preview size (Lightroom>Catalog Settings>File Handling>Standard Preview Size) meet the image display needs, it would not try to render the 1:1 preview instead. This depends on factors such as this standard preview size settings, your negative size and the image display size. The fact that you zoom to 1:1 and it becomes sharper is because when zooming to 1:1, Lightroom forces the rendering of the 1:1 previews.

Some suggestions:
1. What is your current standard preview size settings? Try to increase it.
2. Build the 1:1 previews ahead of file via Library>Previews>Build 1:1 Previews.
3. Adjust your display resolution.

Johan's reports seem to center around switching from the develop module to the library module and the preview in the library does not always update with the new settings (such as dehire) right after the module switch. His issue is still under investigation and we haven't been able to reproduce it yet (I could not either).

Simon,

thanks for your comprehensive reply and suggestions.

1. my preview size setting is 1:1, so there is nothing to increase. By testing different        options I found out that if convert images into dng files during import LR accepts    my selection regarding the preview setting. If I import images in the Canon file     format CR though, LR always creates 1:1 previews regardless of what I choose.

2. yes, this is an option, especially when 1:1 previews have been discarded after a    while ( in my case 30 days )

3. I am using the max and best display resolution already. Apart from this it seems to    me that display resolution is not relevant because images are sharp when they are    rendered 1:1 which indicates the issue is software related.

In the past I have been using the dng format and the standard previews. Only
lately I started to import in the CR file format. Also I have been working on images older than 30 days which explains unsharp previews.

So far so good and I guess I know what to do in the future.

But now comes something strange. With all my testing I did today I figured out that 1:1 images are sharper in the Library Module than in the Development Module. Something I did not notice before. Have you heard of that before ?

I shot an image of the spines of some books which shows nicely what I said and I am enclosing 2 pdf of the image in Library and Development Module. It is not an awful lot of a difference in image quality but it is clearly visible. RackMultipart20180806112717h5p-4d6589a9-20a4-4da7-b7e4-6ee7d06e9e7e-1860089794.pngRackMultipart20180806475191wd5-94f3853f-527b-4897-9b97-05e320ee05a1-1366665799.png

Simon,

some additional information for you:

I figured out that if I have a 1:1 preview ( sharp ) and work on it in the development module it is unsharp after switching from development back to library module.
This is exactly the same what Johan described and it is very frustrating. I then have to zoom in and out to get it sharp.

What is your plan with this problem ?

I use Canon 5dmk4 and when I load RAWs, most of them come "soft". Those made with shallow depth of field. If I use big apertures, like f1.8, I need to zoom in, wait for it to completely load (slow) and only then when I zoom out to fit my screen I will have perfectly sharp image.

So steps to produce this:

1. Load any shallow DOF image
2. Normal screen size, relative to the monitor is not sharp. It looks kind of soft with difficult to predict where the focal point is.
3. Zooming to 100% renders the image entirely and nicely. But it's a very slow process.
4. Zooming out and having full image on the screen is finally tack sharp.

Any ideas?
It wasn't like that before. I remember LR rendering any screen size nicely and sharply even before going to 100%. So either they changed the rendering, some settings or it's a bug.

The issue happens very often but not always. Lightroom shows low resolution image after changing settings (see the screenshots). If I change current image twice or even click on the same image on the ribbon, then it shows the correct image. The issue is so annoying that I'm going to stop using Lightroom just because of it. Please fix it as soon as possible!

Hi there, I think this issue is the same: https://feedback.photoshop.com/photos...

There’s a workaround (re-install lightroom, reset settings, discard previews and rebuild previews) but it only works in Windows.

I’ve recently purchased a MacBook Pro and have been struggling with this since. The previews used in the library look very low quality. Especially on darker images and shadow areas. Zooming in at 1:1 or more does render a full quality preview in develop but not in library nor on slideshows.

I can see that this thread as been marked as “in progress” but does this mean that the issue has been identified and a fix is on the way? Any idea of when this will be out?

I've installed new version from scratch (deleting the old one entirely, keeping the prefs only) and it seems to work now.
