P: Progress bar displays inprogress long after the DeNoise command has completed creating a file.

I would like to get some feedback on  the follwing issue.

 

USed H/W: HP Z6 G4, 2 CPUs Intel 6136 Xeon3.0 12C

128 Gb of RAM

GPU Nvidia RTX 4070 ti Super

Primary disk 500Gb SSD and 2TB SSD gen 5.

Windows 11.  64 WKST Plus

 

Issue: DeNoise , "Lightroom not responding"

 

Example: Denoising a Nikon RAW file from Z9.  (Size ~55Mb)

Lightroom Denoise estimates a 7 s process time.

This fits well with the time the GPU is active and staying at about 90% usage.

Once the GPU stops after 7s the systems seem to be idling for time of 2 minutes before it has completed

the task and returned a DNG file to my disk. During these 2 min the message the message "Lightroom Framkalla Not responding" apperas at the top of the Lightroom window.
Have also run a test by selecting 16 RAWfiles and recorded times. Result The GPU runs for 4 min and 36 s ( It seems to run one RAW-file at the time at a similar GPU time of operation (7 sek) but also a short paus between each  RAW files processing and once all RAW files is processed in the GPU (time 4 min 36 s) it then once again gets into the "sleep mode" and message "Lightroom framkalla Not responding" pops up again. This sleep mode goes on for 25 min and 46 s.  Which menas the 16 RAW files is returend after a total time of almost 30 min.

 

One final note: Durin the "Sleep mode" the CPU in the one file example just idles around 3-4% while in the 16 file example the cPU idles around 5-7%

The team is investigating this issue which appears to be a progress bar fault and not a fault in the actual DNG creating. I've cross-referenced this thread to the existing bug.

Denoise runs entirely in the GPU and that's where to start troubleshooting. It doesn't touch the CPU, except maybe minimally in writing the resulting linear DNG.

 

Is this a laptop with dual graphics? Dual graphics is always a potential conflict - you can't send data to one GPU and get it back from the other.

 

Please post Help > System Info.

 

If you have Photoshop installed, System Info from Photoshop is much more complete and gives a better picture, so it might be easier to spot problems there.

I have now tried Denoise in Photoshop and there it works "like a charm" finnishing the whole denoise process of a Z9 rawfile in about 12 seconds. This seem to confirm this as a Lightroom specific bug ?

 

Being new I do not know how one get ADOBE support on a bug? Is Adobe support input done through this channel or in some other way that I have not been able to find?

That sounds odd. ACR and Lightroom use the GPU in the exact same way, they're the same processing engines - if they are at the exact same version level.

 

If a moderator could move this to the "Bugs" subsection, that is the official bug report channel. And to me this does sound like a bug - although I don't think I have ever heard about this before.

 

Maybe someone else can think of something.

Thanks Rikk,

Referring to “Anatomy of a great bug report” see below:

 

Issue: Lightroom not responding during Denoise despite running on competent H/W.

Provide Photoshop/Lightroom version: Answer : Refer to data above for all info on all involved h/w and s/w.

Provide good steps to reproduce the behavior:  Answer: See above for performed tests and results to repeat on identical h/w and s/w as also briefly described below. (Both in Lightroom and Photoshop)

Short description of steps to perform

  • In Lightroom open a Nikon Z9 Raw file and run Denoise in the development module.
  • Record the time the denoise process requires. Note the time of unresponsiveness of the PC and the message “Lightroom not responding”  (Study your computers resource display during the test, GPU usage) .

Expected result 2 min and 7 s of which during about 2 minutes there seem to be no activity  and also the message “Lightroom not responding” is shown part of the time)

Do step 1) & 2) above now using Photoshop standalone. Apply Denoise in the Camera Raw module.
Expected result:  13 seconds of process time and no messages or unresponsiveness from the PC.

Compare your findings and hopefully you may be able to find the Root Cause for the different result.

I really believe all the data from my testing and also for s/w and h/w is already reported in the thread above. Maybe this could help as a summary though.  

I also guess that it will be difficult to test on identical h/w even if the data of my h/w is available above.

The only thing I can come up with is to offer you to run a test remotely live on my PC to confirm these findings.

As a sidenote also note that using Photoshop standalone as my denoise method is not useful from a practical standpoint when it comes to the workflow. I am sure you understand this.

I do not care if this is a Lightroom  bug or a h/w problem as long as the root cause is established. (Without RC no resolve)

Let me know if I you need any more details on this.

Maybe useful to add a commnet to the enclosed photo above. The progress bar reaches where it is at in the phot within 7-10 seconds and after there sits there for about 2 minutes until the process is completed.

In that screenshot it appears that you started an import, and then selected the develop module. As a result you are having LrC act on the import and act on bringing up a develop module preview, and then acting upon any edits you created, and any edits you are attempting. As such, you have increased the workload upon resources that LrC is impacting. Advise you wait for any import to finish before trying to move on to develop, or for that matter, even moving on to metadata mods , etc.

 

/Edit/followup/ Ok, I have no clue why I thought the author was in the middle of an import. So my above statement is of no value.

I do realize that bugs happen to some people some of the time; not all people all of the time. 

 

I also realize that many bugs aren't actually bugs.

 

But still, it would be interesting to hear from other users with RTX 4070 Ti and Nikon Z9 - just to get a baseline of what to expect. Are there others with problems? If not, maybe start looking for possible causes outside LrC/Nvidia/Nikon.

 

Whichever way you look at it, it's really odd that it works in ACR and not in LrC.

 

Oh, once again - are ACR and LrC at the same version level?

What you se is the progress bar for the denoise function.

Translated to english it says: Generating a DNG-file using Denoise. 

 

There is no import going on.

 

What make you believe that?

I do not expect that there are many using the RTX4070ti Super yet since it was released just a few weeks ago.

I also guess most RTX4070ti Super has been sold to gamers so far.

Nevertheless as you say the really strange thing is that it work in photoshop standalone (ACR). To have any view on that strange thing I would have to have deep knowledge of any diffrences in s/w.

Great to see that Adobe is using Customer Advocacy Coordinators to ensure that the customer interests are represented within Adobes organization and work to foster a positive customer experience!

I might not have fully understood your short post which basically only contain two links?

I took it as you were asking me to act according to these links even though I did not fully understand what you planned to do or what you would like me to do.

Please note that I am not used to this this way of communicating through a community discussion forum. I just assume that you can read the whole thread and all previous info included such as my testing and my prints outs with details on s/w and h/w used. Is that correct?

I have not seen any response from you to my latest reply. Did I miss that?

Is there any more information you need or something more I can do to assist you in resolving this issue.

My offer to let you run my PC remotely or maybe just have a Teams meeting where I share my Screen to enable you to evaluate the issue yourself still stands.

A specific and obvious question would be to let me know if you have obtained any explanation to the different behavior between Lightroom and Photoshop (ACR) yet? I assume that would be a good first step to understand more and be able to categorize this issue?

I have done more testing and again confirmed the difference in performance between Lightroom & Photoshop and this time also noted that the file created by the two different programs has a different name extension. Lightroom file is is named xxxx_Förbättrad_BR while the Photoshop produced is xxxx_Förbättrad_NR. (Obviously BR is the Swedish short and NR the English). Both files are identical in size.

Look forward to hearing from you regarding the difference in Denoise-process time between Lightroom and Photoshop and any possible corrective action or workaround to harmonize the process time for the programs.

I don't work in support. I work in Engineering. My goal in posting on this thread was to direct you to the correct information for understanding when, if, and how to report a bug.  This is a peer-to-peer forum with a great group of community experts and some volunteer "Legends", some of whom you already communicate with. They work with these types of problems daily and are very good an providing help.

If you desire 1 on 1 support, contacting Adobe Customer Care is your best route. 

 

My 2 cents is to continue working with the @D Fosse  & @GoldingD,  who are already engaged in this forum thread. When Camera Raw (Photoshop as you've indicated above) provides vastly different results my first hunch is that you have a bad Lightroom Classic install.

 

Clean Lightroom Install Procedure

  • Close Lightroom
  • Restart the computer
  • Use the Adobe Creative Cloud App to uninstall Lightroom
  • Restart the computer
  • Install Lightroom via the Creative Cloud App without launching any other programs.
  • Restart the computer
  • Launch Lightroom
  • Wait 5 minutes


Another possible avenue is to check with Nvidia's support forum to see if they can advise as to settings, drivers, and other troubleshooting.

Ok Rikk, understood, thanks.

 

Seeing your title and that you are an Adobe employee made me obviously making an incorrect assumption. For a while a thougt this meant that there were a chance of getting actual Adobe expertise support on this issue.

My Missunderstanding was based on the online definition of "Customer Advocacy" below.

"What is Customer Advocacy?

Customer advocacy is the act of putting customer needs first and working to deliver solution-based assistance through your products and services. "

 

Sorry for this misunderstanding. I have tried the last straw according to your proposal on uninstall and reinstall following excatly your described procedure. Sorry but no change, still working great in  Photoshop standalone but not so much in Lightroom.

I can not put more work into this without actual Adobe expertise support since I need to produce instead of spending my time trying to solve problems on the tools I am using.

Will use a suitable denoise plugin instead since I do not expect any solution from Adobe on this.

I am sorry that a clean reinstall did not affect your issue. 

Next in the 'things to try' that I don't see mentioned here in this thread are to reset preferences.  They survive an uninstall/reinstall. 

This procedure works for both Lightroom Classic and Lightroom Desktop.

If you are using Lightroom Desktop, it can change your local storage location. Please review this setting after resetting preferences. 

 

Reset Procedure:

1. Close Lightroom.

2. Hold down [Alt/Opt]+[Shift] while restarting Lightroom.

3. Overwrite the Preferences when prompted by the dialog.

4. Close Lightroom.

5. Restart Lightroom.

Beyond that, I would recommend Adobe Support or working with the expert here on the forum. 

I suspect your issue is system-specific based on what I have seen in this thread, not seen elsewhere or experienced on my own systems. 

Regarding Customer Advocacy:

My role at Adobe is being a conduit for customers' voice in meetings and communications with Adobe's engineering, product management, marketing, and other departments. I also act as a primary liaison, reporting information on bugs and features back to customers of the Photography products at Adobe,  through various venues, including this forum.

Hi Rikk,

Unfortunately, your last proposal did not solve this either. Running time in Lightroom is still a factor of at least 6-10 times longer than in Photoshop even if the actual runtime in the GPU seems similar.

At some point my feeling about the RC (Root Cause) for this difference between a standalone run in Photoshop (ACR) compared to Lightroom got me going back to the basic way of breaking down a technical issue. Basically, ask yourself if there is any obvious difference between the two cases, if one assumes that the Denoise logic are identical in function and programmed in the same way?

Even for a person like me being completely ignorant about the S/W and logics used in this case it seems that one answer is pretty obvious?  (A question that I assume would  be easy to answer for an Adobe S/W Engineer familiar with the Lightroom  S/W in this case.)

The most obvious difference to me is that Photoshop is running without the huge “rucksack” that Lightroom must carry in the form of administrative task related to all data catalogued resulting in an enormous amount of data summarized in the Lightroom catalog-file.

In my case I have more than 450 000 photos archived in my catalogue.

Based on this I made a simple test by making a small test catalogue with only two Z9 raw files in it and tested. Voila! Now times for the whole denoise process went down significantly to around 20 s. Still somewhat longer than around 14 s in Photoshop. There was still a small “hesitation” at the end of the process in Lightroom probably explaining the difference even though small.

With my limited knowledge about this I do not say that this is the ONE and only explanation and leave that to you and your Adobe experts to contemplate and in case the find it plausible start figuring out a way to “get rid of the rucksack” for the denoise process which it seems obvious that your competitors in the “denoise-business” seems to have figured out based on their considerably quicker process with similar result with regards to denoising.

(I did a test with and without the GPU used in the export and did not see any significant difference)

Would however be interesting to get your and  your experts view on this , maybe they are already aware and working on an improvement?

Hi Rikk,

My Z9-file is 57Mb and the max to upload is 47Mb. Any other proposal how to send?

I anyway send my summary of tests and results ahead for you to study.

 

Test 1: Using LRC and my normal big Catalouge.

Setting 50% Denoise. 
Tested bout with Preference set to: GPU Auto or Anpassad use GPU for export.  No difference in time.

Result : Recorded time 2 Min and 17 s.

 

Test 2: ACR (Photoshop standalone.) Opening the file directly in Photoshop.

Setting 50%Denoise

Result: Time 14 seconds.

 

Test 3: Created a new catalogue with just one file in it (Z91_4584-4.NEF)

Settings Denoise 50%
Kept preference to Auto for GPU in Preferences since it had made no difference in test 1. (With setting at Auto Lightroom also says “Your system supports full acceleration automatically”

However, this time I could not repeat the 24s time recorded in my similar test a few days ago. I was a bit confused. (Actual time was unchange in that run = 2 min 17s)

Checked the box for “Use GPU for export” and rerun the test.  Once again got the previous 24 s as time.

Let me know if anything is unclear about my  the tests and results.
