P: Subject Mask from previous versions are requesting an update

Community Beginner ,

After updating Lightroom Classic to v14 and converted my database, all the edited photos that had a "Subject Mask" applied now have an empty mask with a warning and exclamation mark (!).

If I let Lightroom correct the mask pushing the exclamation mark on a single photo, it seems the correct subject is selected, keeping the edits. If I do the same with multiple photos together it appears teh usual form that tells that the AI masks are recalculated, but at the end all the masks are still empty with warnings.

Greetings all,

A new update for Adobe Photography Products has been released.  The 14.0.1 update contains an update for this issue.

If you do not see the update in your Creative Cloud Application, you can refresh it by hitting [Ctrl/Cmd]+[Alt/Opt]+[ R ].

Note: It may take up to 24 hours for your update to be available in your Creative Cloud app.

Thank you for being so patient.

@dewaynec

If you've previously used the workaround, no additional action is necessary.

If not, the LrClassic team recommends restoring the 13.x catalog from the "Old Lightroom Catalog" folder and re-upgrading it.

Manually update any masks that may have been updated in 14.0

It is important to restore the 13.x catalog and upgrade it using the same location as before to avoid the need to regenerate previews.

Note: If you did a lot of work in 14.0, it isn't recommended to restore from the 13.x backup.

Just updated to Lighroom Classic 14, and a single client catalog to the new version. None of my masks are sticking as I scroll through the gallery.

The masks are there, but they are disabled. I can update the masks, but every time I move to the next image and go back again, all of the masks disable, and I'm told I need to Update All again. Selecting all of the images, enabling autosync, and choosing "Update AI Settings" does not work. The dialog and progress bar complete, but the masks are not updated.

It does appear that if I scroll through each individual image, choose "Update AI Settings," and then save the metadata to the DNG file, that it is working. But I'm having to do this for every single image.

This is a SERIOUS PROBLEM. It seems like EVERY TIME there is a new version of Lightroom Classic, it kills some feature that makes it entirely unusable.

I'm having the same issue, and I'm dead in the water. Why does this happen with every major update of late?

Having to revert to a previous version. Thanks, Adobe.

It looks like closing Lightroom Classic after updating the catalog file, and reopening it again may solve the problem.

Hmmm.

What do you mean by "updating the catalog file" ? is it the same as "optimizing the catalog" ?

@C.Cella Thanks for your answer, I'll check this plugin ! Regarding updating, would you advise not to do it and waiting until Adobe has fixed the problem ? What do you mean by "checking if the selections are good" ?

To find Ai maks you need to use this Plug-in : https://johnrellis.com/lightroom/anyfilter.htm

P.s.

@John R Ellis I noticed only now that there is no way to do a "generalised" search for Ai masks (of any type)
It could added so users can immediately do the search instead of adding all the Ai types.

As you know it's simple to identify Ai masks.

For clarity: Opening an existing catalog in the new version updates the catalog to where it is no longer usable with a pervious version of the app.

The latest update no longer renames the catalog file. Instead, its saves a copy of the old catalog in a new "Old Lightroom Catalogs” folder.

I have the same issue. I managed to work around this / fix (let's call it that way). All my masks went to hell.

What I did was to close Lightroom, then manually copy/restore the old catalog (from the directory where upgrade process saved it) - to be specific I took two files: .lrcat and .lrcat-data

Just be sure not to overwrite your backup - do another copy somewhere, so you don't loose it 🙂

Then I opened Lightroom. It instantly asked me to upgrade the catalog (because I restored it from backup). After the upgrade (this time no error about issues with .lrcat-data), my masks were again messed up. BUT I didn't do anything, no manual updates on masks, I just closed the Lightroom completely.

Then after reopening it again - masks seem to be all good. I think they did some update in the background, because I didn't have to click anything. All went to normal.

That's how to break the upgrade process, Adobe. Fortunately it's doing backups.

Hope this helps someone. For me it worked. Hopefully I'm not the only one.

One of the Classic Team members has reproduction instructions for this issue, and we have written a bug.  Thanks for all the additional details.

Workaround:

  • Upgrade catalog
  • Close LrC
  • Reopen LrC

If you've already upgraded your catalog, you may need to go to the "Old Lightroom Catalog" folder, retrieve your previous catalog , and perform the update using the above instructions.

CONFIRMED POSSIBLE WORKAROUND:

I used different catalogs for each client...

I updated a different catalog. All of the Masks are broken again. If I close the app, reopen the catalog, select all, enable Auto Sync in the Develop module, choose Update AI Settings (and let it complete the process) before closing the app again.

Upon opening the catalog a third time—all of my masks are enabled.

Very simply the new Ai Selection might not be as  good as the previous one(s) after after "Update AI Settings".

So to be sure one should check the before and after having updated Ai.

In my case, I didn't have to update masks - I have many photos with AI masks, that would took ages. But for some reason, as described in my previous msg, after I closed the lightroom, it never prompted me again for this. I checked older photos, no issues with masks either. So after restore of catalog, repeating the upgrade (and breaking masks again) and then immediately closing the lightroom after it completed (without touching any settings at all), all went back to normal for me.

@C.Cella Thank you for your explanations. Not sure I'm gonna check several thousand images! I prefer to wait for a more permanent solution - and after all, it may come from Adobe. Luckily I made a Time Machine backup just the day before the new version of LR, so I'll remain cautious and do as little processing as possible before I get a solution...

Cordialement, D

@phil_0541 If you need to do new edits then Update Ai and check the before and after.

If not keep the current Ai and forget about updating.

Unfortunately no filter in LrC allows to find Ai Masks that do not have the latest ModelVersion nor it has ever provided that kind of info in the Ui.

That kind of search can be done with the Plug-in I mentioned...but it's not so straightforward.

I have in mind a Plug-in that automatically apprends the model version to the Ai masks, or at least a codifed one.

E.g.

Sky v.2023

But I never kept track of the release dates of the new model versions all these years.

I edited a large number of photos with the prior version using Lightroom Classic.  The edits used Remove with AI.
I updated Lightroom Classic to the latest version and I see all of my edits require updating.  I tried selecting all of the photos in the Library module and selecting Photo-Develop Settings-Update AI settings and it tells me it is updating AI settings and may take some time.
When the minutes pass and the percentage reaches 100% I am left with the photos that have not changed.
However, if I go to each photo and press Ctrl-Alt-U (shortcut key for update AI) it works.  Do I have to go through all of my previously edited photos and pres Ctrl-Alt-U on each photo?
Help!!!!

You will need to upgrade your catalog again. A copy of your catalog from the first 14.0 upgrade is stored in the "Old Lightroom Catalogs" folder.

Would anyone know, will making a windows restore point (Windows 10 Pro) be a safeguard too, i.e. if all goes wrong restore the restore point will resolve it? Or is the restore point just for Windows, and doesn't "cover" LR Classic?

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.

I came here because i have had this problem after updating to the latest version of Lightroom (Classic). V.14.

Like the other posters I kept updating and as soon as I went back to the image I'd just updated, it had the warning sign again.

I was pulling my hair out i swear.

I found the fix above and sorted it eventually.

i hadnt restarted Lightroom after updating so it didnt work first time.  After I realised I had to be in Grid mode in the Library  module I tried again and it seems to have worked.

A lot of faffing about for something that really should be explained when updating.

Anyway, its working again now for me. Thankfully i didnt export the photos before I realised.

thanks to John Ellis for the fix 👍
