P: Unable to move crop to image edges after negative (CCW) rotation

Community Beginner ,
Apr 24, 2025 Apr 24, 2025

Hi,
I’m experiencing a recent issue with the Crop tool in Lightroom Classic.

When I try to crop an image after applying a rotation correction (either automatic or manual), the crop frame won’t let me move it fully to the edges of the image. It’s as if there’s an invisible boundary about one centimeter from the top or side edges, preventing me from placing the crop where I want.

This didn’t happen earlier today and started occurring with the last two photos I’ve edited. I’ve tried:

  • Toggling “Constrain to Image” on and off

  • Using different aspect ratios (including “Original” and “Custom”)

  • Removing the rotation, cropping first, and then reapplying the rotation

  • Restarting Lightroom

In all cases, the issue returns as soon as I apply any rotation, even a minor one. I’m attaching a screenshot that clearly shows how the crop frame cannot be moved freely even though the image has visible content.

Is there a setting or recent behavior that could be causing this?
I’d appreciate any guidance.

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.

What version of LrC? There is a new version out today, 14.3. Are you using that?

Mac or PC? OS version?

@beln_3475

It is a bug in LrC 14.3 which needs urgent fixing. It only affects portrait orientation images that have a non-zero Angle.

If you Rotate your portrait image CCW or CW, then the crop can be moved to any edge, but that's not a workable solution.

Any portrait photo that has been previously cropped and has a non-zero Angle will suffer from this bug. This results in a crop done in LrC 14.2, or an earlier version, being shifted if it previously touches or is too near the top or bottom edge.

This is not a good situation at all and I hope it gets fixed very soon. An immediate update would be best.

If this is going to be a serioius problem, I suggest rolling back to version 14.2 until it is fixed.

Hi everyone,

Thank you so much for flagging this issue. This unexpected behavior after applying rotation is clearly a real hindrance.

We appreciate all the detailed info you’ve shared, especially noting that the issue arises with portrait-oriented images and when a non-zero rotation angle is involved. That level of detail really helps us get to the root of the problem faster.

We’ve passed your report along to our product team for further investigation. In the meantime, as others have suggested, rolling back to LrC version 14.2 might be a helpful temporary workaround until we resolve this.

Thanks again for your patience and for helping make Lightroom better.

Best,

Anshul Saini

@Rikk Flohr: Photography, please move this to Bugs and link it to the existing internal bug report that I understand already exists. There are likely to be more reports about this soon.

Hi again,

Thank you for your response. I’d like to add a few more details that might
help clarify the issue, as I’ve done a few more tests and noticed a pattern.

The invisible boundary that prevents me from moving the crop frame to the
edge of the image only appears when I rotate the image in one
direction—specifically, when I rotate it counterclockwise (to the left). No
matter how extreme the rotation is, if I rotate it clockwise (to the
right), I’m able to move the crop frame all the way to the edge without any
issue.

Also, this invisible margin seems to only affect the top and bottom edges
of the image, not the sides.

I hope this additional information helps.

Thanks again!

This is a bug that should trigger a 14.3.1 release

The additional information regarding negative Angles should help Adobe narrow down this problem.

The latest version 14.3 has a big problem. The cropping tool, when adjusting the horizon to the left, cannot move the image either up or down, so a lot of details are cropped off, the horizon to the right works fine. We need to pass this point on to the developers.

I am not able to understand your issue from the instructions provided. Can you please post more detailed step-by-step instructions or possibly a video that describes the issue you are seeing?

[This post contains formatting and embedded images that don't appear in email. View the post in your Web browser.]

Do you mean that when you're cropping a portrait photo and you have a Crop Angle that's negative, you're not able to move the crop all the way to the top or the bottom?

johnrellis_0-1745779950289.png

If that's what you're observing, that's a known bug introduced in LR 14.3:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-bugs/p-crop-tool-issue-unable-to-move-crop-to-image...

If you're describing something different, please provide more details as requested by Rikk Flohr.

I have been having an issue over the last two days that is new to me and Lightroom. Before I start I should mention I use 8x10 aspect ratio for almost everything.

I have started to notice that when I have to adjust the angle of the photo get the correct crop perspective Lightroom is automatically adjusting the image within the crop and cutting off the top or the bottom of the final photo when I do a finished review.

But when I go back and look at the crop, the entire image is within the parameters. But Lightroom keeps auto adjusting it and cutting off the photo for the finished picture. The only way around this is to substantially lessen the angle and eventually Lightwoom will stop cutting off the photo.

How can I get around this new issue? It is really inhibiting my work with my photos.  As you can see from my photo example Lightroom is cutting the top of her head off despite it being within the original crop that I did. Why is this happening (it has never happened before and I edit photos like this all the time)?

@robc22409454 calls out another symptom of this bug: The crop displayed while the crop tool is open isn't the same as after it is closed.  An exported photo matches what's seen when the crop tool is closed:

Also, note that this bug occurs on any photo whose internal orientation setting at the time of import is other than AB (0 degrees, not mirrored), BA (0 degrees, mirrored), CD (180 degrees, not mirrored), or DC (180 degrees, mirrored).

Portrait photos from cameras typically have orientations BC (90 degrees, not mirrored) or DA (270 degrees, not mirrored), and thus the bug occurs with them.

I was just coming in to report the same issue. Glad I found this thread. I will add my screen shots. I am only seeing the issue when rotating in one diretion, not the other.

Cheers!

Yes, this problem exists on both Macs and Windows. And it only occurs if you rotate the angle to the left. I think ADOBE will fix it soon, because it was impossible to work. I rolled back to the previous version 14.2.

The Any Crop plugin works around this bug. You can use its Adjust command to set the size and angle of crops, regardless of the photo's orientation. It's not as convenient as the built-in Crop tool, but it does let you adjust crops while zoomed in. It has a 30-day free trial, which hopefully will last you until Adobe releases a fix.

Latest LR Classic 14.3
MacOS - Sequoia 15.4.1 on a MacBook Pro M4

I have an image I had to rotate that my second shooter took... but the crop window doesn't appear to want to go all the way to the top of the available space. But it actually is. So the crop you see, does not match the output.

Looks like this problem: https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-bugs/p-unable-to-move-crop-to-image-edges-after-neg..., but check that it is not caused by the Aspect Ratio in Transform (you might be able to solve it with that slider).

Two observations:

I. Can be fixed by turning off GPU assistance in preferences - but returns when this is reselected

Ii. Appears to affect LR too, at least when editing local files.
