It is. But I've noticed it is read-only file. Is it supposed to be that?

By @PhakornS

No, that doesn't make sense, because that means Lightroom can't save any changes in it (which would explain what you see). Maybe you should delete it completely, so Lightroom can rebuild it when you update all masks one more time.

I work on my desktop mainly and it happens here all the time. When I go on LR on my phone it also has me update masks there too. I don't change my catalog either. Does anyone know if we start a new catalog if it will go away?

I messaged the help desk and IT WORKED! First make sure all LR Classic is on read/write to your username on your desktop. Turns out my catalog was corrupt and what we did was created a new named catalog and imported my old catalog to it. This rebooted everything. I had to update the previous masks that I did before BUT moving forward all new masks and clone edits I did kept their edit. I also noticed my masks worked so much faster and didn't lag like it's been doing the last 6 months. I hope this helps anyone who's having this issue and crossing my fingures I don't wake up to a million "update mask" notices tomorrow. It's been about 4 days since the new catalog import and it's been going strong.

I also ended up creating a new catalog and now no longer have the problem!
However, I also purchased a MacBook Pro with M3 max, as I believe a lot
of my issues with related to my iMac 27” 2020 simply not being capable of
coping with the latest AI masking technology.

Thanks, Kimberly. Your effort is much appreciated.

I do have a couple questions as your posting is vague to me on a couple things. First, what are the procedures to make sure all "Lr Classic" is on read/write? Do you mean the catalog files? If so, none of mine will go to read/write except the actual catalog file. What are the procedures to import the old catalog when a new one is created?

Thanks much,

Brian

When I created a new catalog and tried the import from exisiting catalog option I get the following error: "Lightroom could not import this catalog because of an unknown error." Apparently, corrupt catalogs cannot be imported. It looks like we are back to square one.

Hi Brian,

I also have been unable to import the old corrupt catalog.  The new catalog I created is now a new start for me, super frustrating however it works like a dream!

How do you create a new catalog?

By @mmScheel

If you can start LrC, that is, open a catalog, then in the menu click on /File/New Catalog/

If you cannot start LrC, that is you cannot open a catalog, then try the following:

On a MAC, press and hold down the Option key, and click (double click) on the LrC startup icon.

On A Windows PC,  press and hold down the Alt key, and click (double click) on the LrC startup icon.

This should open a select catalog screen, upon which you can select New Catalog.

Does anyone know if it is just the .lrcat catalog file that is typically corrupt or would it be the settings file as well? If I could copy my settings file over to the newly created catalog, that would save quite a bit of time. However, I don't want to do that if it may cause the problems again.

I'm a fine art photographer. Since several years now, I've become increasingly frustrated by, not to say fed up with, all the gimmicks Adobe has added to LrC. The User Interface has become totally cluttered with totally un-photographic garbage, e.g. Artifical Intelligenc (who needs that except those who like fake photos, fake people and a fake world?!), way too complicated actions in order to just use a dodge and burn brush (that's the root of all real photographe, dear AI!) which now forces me to make a "mask", name it, and always open the "masking" menu in order to see that I actually applied dodging or burning!
I've had this very same problem, and nothing helps to correct it:  AI masks or settings needing to be updated randomly and without any real cause (hey, I thought the I in AI stood for "Intelligence"?!...).
I've worked in IT in a previous life, a long time ago, and I can tell Adobe programmers one thing: The more stuff you stuff into a program, the more chances there are, the more opportunities you create, to have bugs, to have things work against each other instead of with each other, and especially the more the user interface, the usability, the learning curve gets worse!
If only I could revert back to a Lightroom like it was in the very beginning: A fresh breeze, a simple, consistent, logical, helpful tool for my digital photography workflow, a truly fantastic program to use. I can't anymore. I've been forced for years to upgrade, update, convert catalogs, files, metadata and all the other parameters, caches, and data files that now surround and clutter what once was a truly great piece of programming.
Every couple of months new "issues" (problems!!!) arise with LrC, syncing, and really essential things like renaming Published Folders - a bug that has been around for two years and was never solved.
What I gather from all the testing over the last three weeks with a serious problem affecting syncing to the Adobe Cloud, and now seeing how many (!) other users struggle with the AI settings forcing us to click a menu item to have the "Intelligence" of AI wake up and do whatever it deems necessary to do to fake a true "photograph" into a "digital image" (there's a very clear difference!), is that LrC cannot handle anything related to permissions on its own files whenever the OS (in my case macOS, thank heavens for that) has to or wants to make things more "secure".
I'm fed up, really fed up. Either I now sell all my digital cameras and accessories and go back to using film, or I dump Adobe's software for something else (without any guarantee I don't have to become a slave to AI also in that new "universe") and find myself forced to rework almost twenty years of editing.
What I don't agree with, is that people who are being well paid to make, correct, de-bug, and improve a piece of software, expect the users (who pay them...) to do all the testing, logging, de-bugging, writing on forums like this one and thus actually helping them, etc., all for free and having to waste days or weeks of work and income in order to see their hopes of a new update or new version without any bugs or annoyances or minutes of waiting before a catalog opens up (!), vanish every single time.
I don't know about other users, but I'm not taking this anymore. I don't take Adobe serious anymore. Sorry, I've tried. I've tried since 2006. It's time to create and edit photographs (either digitally or in the dark room) again, without any energy, good mood, or money wasted on doing the testing, the de-bugging, the logical thinking for those who are being well-paid to do that in the first place.
"Less Is More!", meaning less AI, less faking photographs, less clutter in the user interface, less files surrounding the true software, less complicated uploads and downloads, and whatever syncs to whatever other piece of Adobe software in whatever way...

@The Keeper of the Garden  There is an old latin saying, "Mundus vult decipi, ergo decipiatur" which is still true today and so there's demand for "fake photos" as you called them. For this reason AI tools are useful at least for some of us.

With everything else you wrote I can agree. I'd switch to Capture One if it weren't for Lrc-Ps workflow.

I am having the same issue and have been for the last three days.  I've also spent around 4 hours on the remote sessions with Adobe tech support, and somehow, the technicians act like they've never heard of this before.  There is an obvious issue ongoing.

They have checked for updates, checked my system requirements, created new catalogs, deleted and reimported files, optimized catalogs, and more.  It is not my system that is the error, and I'd bet it's not any of yours either.

The worst part is that I'm on day three with Adobe at the end of my busiest part of the season for me, trying to get my final galleries out the door on time, and I can't do anything because of this issue.  I am beyond frustrated at this point.

If any of you have found a work around, I'd appreaciate any input.

@Kristin3453107984zp You mention a lot of things you tried, but nothing you say talks about the 'catalogname.lrcat-data' in your catalog folder. That is where AI-masks are stored, so that is the most likely place this problem originates and must be solved. Did you read this whole thread before you posted? There are workarounds mentioned that work, at least for some people. You also do not say if you use Mac or Windows. That is also important when trying to find such a workaround. What works for Windows users may not work for Mac users and vice versa.

Hi all. I had this problem too and it seems to be fixed now. I found the solution on this thread

https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-discussions/ai-masks-healing-constantly-undo-and-ne...

Basically I deleted this file "catalogname.lrcat-data" and let Lightroom Classic rebuild it, now the masks are working as normal even after I close and reopen LR the masks are still there.

Apparently the "catalogname.lrcat-data" file is where AI mask data is stored and somehow becamed corrupted??

Anyway here are the steps I did

1. Find where your Lightoom catalog is stored by pressing Edit > Catalog Settings > Location.

2. Close Lightroom

3. Go to your catalog location from Step 1 and find the "catalogname.lrcat-data" file

4. Make a copy of the "catalogname.lrcat-data" somewhere else on your pc (just in case)

5. Delete the "catalogname.lrcat-data" in your catalog location from step 3

6. Open Lightroom and in the Library mode (not Develop) update all AI masks: Photo > Develop Settings > Update AI Settings.

This is extremely annoying.  Doing the same here.  Grid view doesn't make a difference 99% of the time (it worked once).

Another bug it seems.

In my experience, this problem only arises when one uses the healing tools *after* having created AI masks, and/or when applying lens profiles *after* having created AI masks. In that case, it's only logical that the AI masks need to be "updated" or actually recalculated as so many pixels have been shifted or changed.

What is Lightroom Classic 2024?

There is no version with that numbering. Current version would be 13.3.1.
